SUMMARY:Rethinking Planning: Is There a Better Way
DESCRIPTION:Denver planner and this year’s Serenbe Institute Visiting Fellow\, Jeff Winston\, will present a lecture\, “Rethinking Planning: Is There a Better Way\,” at 4:00 PM Saturday\, May 7 at the Serenbe Institute Studio. It will be immediately followed by a reception at Brigitte and Shelton Stanfill’s house. There is no charge and everyone is invited. \nIn more than 25 years of professional practice\, Winston Associates has completed more than 35 comprehensive plans—for towns\, cities and regions. The time is right to take a fresh look at the current state of planning—how well it really works\, how it’s perceived by the general public\, and how can it be made more transparent\, understandable\, less expensive and actually used in day to day decision-making by communities. The question posed is: does this require modest adjustments to what we do today\, or do we need to reexamine our approach from top to bottom?

SUMMARY:Form-based Zoning (CM | TBD)
DESCRIPTION:Why Your City Planning is Pushing This! \nREGISTER ONLINE or for more information call 770-813-3370 \nForm-based codes foster predictable built results and a high-quality public realm by using physical form and design (rather than separation of uses) as the organizing principle for the code. Form-based codes offer a powerful alternative to conventional zoning\, allowing communities to consider more than land use and density. \nThis half-day course is an interactive course\, answering the following questions by using examples from around the country as well as visiting a local site. The course will provide a basic understanding of form-based codes: \n\nhow they are different\nhow they can be applied\nhow they can help implement more sustainable communities\n\nCourse Cost: \n\n$45 Government and Council Member\n$65 Non-Member

SUMMARY:Complete Streets (CM | TBD)
DESCRIPTION:.Mobility is for Everyone! \nREGISTER ONLINE or for more information call 770-813-3370 \nThe streets of our cities and towns are an important part of our communities. In the process\, they are creating better communities for people to live\, play\, work\, and shop. \nTraining provided by:Brad StraderPresident and Managing PartnerITE certified Professional Transportation Planner Chair\, ITE Transportation Planning Council \nCourse Cost: \n\n$45 Government and Council Member\n$65 Non-Member\n\nYou will learn: \n\nWhat are “Complete Streets”\nWhat do “Complete Streets” policies do\nThe many types of “Complete Streets”

SUMMARY:Georgia Conservancy’s “Drinks and Discussion”
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nOur city streets are not just a means of driving from one place to another. They’re among our most vital public spaces that should foster walking\, biking and a sense of community. \nOur often overlooked city streets will be the focus of the Georgia Conservancy’s next “Drinks and Discussion” on May 26 at the Conservancy’s offices in Midtown Atlanta. \nTo spark the conversation\, Rebecca Serna from the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition will talk about the Atlanta Streets Alive program and the street festivals they have planned this summer. \nIn addition\, a representative from the city of Atlanta will be on hand to discuss the streetcar line that will soon be built in downtown Atlanta. \n“The goal of the night is to spread the word about alternative modes of transit and smart street design\,” says Georgia Conservancy urban designer\, Deanna Murphy. “For the health of our planet and community\, streets shouldn’t just be for automobiles.” \nWe’ve got the drinks. You bring the discussion.
