SUMMARY:GPA Fall Conference (50+ | CM)
DESCRIPTION:Fall Conference Registration is Open\nThe online registration website is open for the Fall 2013 GPA Conference. We have applied for more than 50 CM credits including topics on Ethics and multiple opportunities for Law credits. Early Registration is $225 until September 8\, 2013\, when the price increases to $295. The conference will boast opportunities for mobile workshops to explore one of Georgia’s Golden Isles and plenty of time for networking on the beach. If you have any questions please email Beth Anne Trombetta. \n\nHampton Inn and Suites is Fall Conference Hotel\nThe Hampton Inn and Suites on Jekyll Island is now available for reservations for the Fall GPA Conference. Call the hotel at 912-635-3733 to make reservations\, be sure to mention the “Georgia Planning Association” to get our conference rate (starting at $134+ tax). This hotel will sell out fast so please be sure to book your rooms early for the guaranteed rate. \n\nSponsors needed for 2013 Fall Conference\nThe Georgia Planning Association could not put on quality conferences and events without the generous support of our private practice members. This year is no different and we are looking for several firms to step up and sponsor the 2013 Fall Conference at Jekyll Island. This is a great opportunity to provide your fellow planners with learning and networking opportunities. This is also the opportunity for your company to show off what you have accomplished at an exhibit booth or in address to the GPA membership. Click here to commit to being a sponsor of the Georgia Planning Association Fall 2013 Conference today. If you have any questions please email Tim Preece\, VP of Chapter Services. \nDOWNLOAD FALL CONFERENCE SPONSORSHIP FORM (PDF) \n\nGPA Foundation Silent Auction Items\nIt feels so good to help others and through our Foundation we can all feel GREAT! All you need to do is donate a gift card\, a bottle of wine\, that sculpture your great aunt left you in her will\, a piece of art that no longer matches your décor\, an autographed book by someone we might know or about whom we might care…you get the point. The Foundation Board members will put these items together to have the fundraising auction make sense…and be lots of fun. This year\, it will all be done with tickets so come prepared to take home a treasure and some of that good feeling knowing that you helping to bring people to our meetings and provide other professional development opportunities to those whose agencies cannot afford to make this possible. \nCall or email Marsha Anderson Bomar to arrange pickup (678-708-6148) or bring to the next luncheon and give to a Foundation Board member (Dan Reuter is always easy to spot in a crowd). \n\nMobile Workshops\nOur Fall Conference will feature four exciting workshops that will allow you to immerse yourself into the Jekyll Island and Georgia Coast experience. The mobile workshops will include a walk on the beach\, led by our Keynote Speaker Cathy Sakas with Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary. Another tour will be a leisurely bike ride around the island to learn about how developed and undeveloped areas interact with one another. Some participants will have the opportunity to board the R/V Georgia Bulldog to fish for bottom-dwelling organisms and enjoy wild Georgia shrimp straight from the ocean as you learn about the coastal environment. The mobile workshops will wrap up with a visit to the Georgia Ports Authority and a walking tour of Downtown Brunswick to learn about their impact on the state and new developments\, respectively. \nPlease note that some of the mobile workshops require an additional registration fee to cover transportation costs. A waiting list is available for all mobile workshops.

SUMMARY:The Newton Model: A Story of Community Collaboration and Action
DESCRIPTION:In April 2012\, Baxter International announced its plans to build a $1 billion state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Covington\, GA\, to support its plasma-based treatments. This move will create over 1\,500 new full-time jobs and have a significant impact on the regional economy. \nCommunities across the country seek to draw this type of company to create high-wage jobs and drive economic development\, but how this story unfolded is far from formulaic. \nThis training will share how a dedicated group of community leaders embarked on a process of education\, planning and collaboration that now constitutes the “Newton Model.” Many point to this process\, and the resources it has created\, as crucial to securing the Baxter deal. \nParticipants will come away with a clear understanding of this model of cooperation among local governments\, as well as ideas for how they can spur similar discussions and progress in their own communities.  \nThis one-day training will be followed up by an optional second day interactive Learning Lab on how participants can apply the principles of the “Newton Model” to their communities\, using key facts and data. More information on this day is below. \nDay One: WorkshopOctober 16\, 2013 | 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.The Center | 2104 Washington Street SW\, Covington\, GA 30014Cost is $75 per person and includes breakfast\, lunch and bus tourRegistration deadline: October 2 \nIn a one-day intensive Learning Lab at The Center for Community Preservation and Planning\, attendees will learn how to find and use facts and data to build strong collaborative teams in their community. In advance of the Learning Lab\, The Center’s team of experts will accumulate data\, maps\, research and analysis specific to each attendee’s community. Within a classroom environment\, attendees will: \n\nLearn how to use facts\, data\, maps and other visuals as tools for building collaboration\nExplore accessing data and using maps relevant to their community\nCreate community-specific portfolios filled with fact-based tools\n\nParticipants will create a personalized step by step process for how to begin building stronger collaboration within their community. \n** AICP Certification Maintenance (CM) credits will be pursued for this event. \nDay Two: Learning Lab (created and managed by The Center)October 17\, 2013 | 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.The Center | 2104 Washington Street SW\, Covington\, GA 30014Cost is $600 per person and includes breakfast and lunch. \nREGISTER HERE
