DESCRIPTION:Join the School of City & Regional Planning and Student Planning Association for World Town Planning Day: Planning with LGBTQ Communities: Lessons from Atlanta\, Tampa\, and Houston featuring Petra Doan\, Professor at Florida State University. \nThe presentation will review the resistance to planning for LGBTQ spaces from some quarters and then argue why such planning is needed. Petra will use case examples from Midtown in Atlanta (as an example of planning that failed to include the LGBTQ population) and planning for Ybor City in Tampa as an example of planning that did. She will also discuss briefly a recent planning effort in the Montrose neighborhood of Houston that was very LGBTQ inclusive. She will conclude with a few comments about best practices for planning with LGBTQ populations and for delineating LGBTQ spaces. \nHosted by the Georgia Tech Student Planning Association and the School of City & Regional Planning.  \nThis event is hosted on BlueJeans for an Interactive Session! DESCRIPTION:The DCA Office of Planning\, in partnership with the Georgia Planning Association\, offers a class called the Community Planning Institute to Georgia’s planning commissioners\, elected officials and local government staff. The Institute provides information about planning for land use\, growth and development. \nPreparing and Implementing your Comprehensive Plan is a 2-day class that covers the local comprehensive planning process. You may be eligible for a scholarship for this CPI Class through the Denise Abboud Memorial Fund\, Georgia Planning Memorial Foundation. \nThis class provides: \n\nAn overview of the importance of community planning– why we plan and who should be involved;\nA review of Georgia’s planning requirements; \nHow to engage your constituents in envisioning and planning for their future;\nPlan implementation tools\, including successful examples from PlanFirst communities;\nOther plan implementation tools such as local planning case studies\, zoning\, or form-based codes.\n\nRegistration has closed.

SUMMARY:Cycling for Sustainable Cities
DESCRIPTION:Cycling is a sustainable means of urban travel. It has the potential to serve many short- and medium-distance trips—for commuting to and from work and school\, shopping\, and visiting friends—as well as providing recreation and exercise. Cycling promotes physical\, social\, and mental health\, helps reduce car use\, enhances mobility and independence\, and is economical for both public and personal budgets. \nThis presentation explores how to make city cycling safe\, practical\, and convenient for a broad spectrum of ages\, genders\, and abilities. Buehler and Pucher discuss the latest cycling trends and policies around the world and consider specific aspects of cycling. Based on data from 2019-2020 from cities around the world\, they also review the impacts of COVID-19 on cycling levels and government policies to promote cycling. Taken together\, the presentation demonstrates that the successful promotion of cycling depends on a coordinated package of mutually supportive infrastructure\, programs\, and policies. Cycling should be made feasible for as many people as possible and not limited to especially fit\, daring\, well-trained cyclists riding expensive bicycles. The talk is based on their recent co-edited book Cycling for Sustainable Cities (MIT Press). \nSpeakers\nRalph Buehler is Professor and Chair of Urban Affairs and Planning in the School of Public and International Affairs at Virginia Tech’s Research Center in Arlington\, Virginia. Most of his research has an international comparative perspective\, contrasting transport and land-use policies\, transport systems\, and travel behavior in Western Europe and North America. \nJohn Pucher\, Ph.D. is professor emeritus in the School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University\, in New Jersey\, where he taught from 1978 to 2014. Over more than four decades\, Pucher has conducted research on urban transport in North America\, Europe\, Australia\, and Asia. \nAll state APA chapters in the Southeast are welcome to participate in this webinar that VA APA and NC APA are organizing and co-sponsoring.
