SUMMARY:Redesigning Cities at Georgia Tech
DESCRIPTION:Redesigning Cities at Georgia Institute of Technology is a series of presentations + conversations between leading experts that address a range of 21st Century urban challenges: social capital\, equity\, climate change\, outdated infrastructure\, disruptive technologies\, and money. The series is hosted by Ellen Dunham-Jones\, professor and director of the Master of Science in Urban Design degree in the Georgia Tech School of Architecture. \nEpisode 25: Redesigning Cities for Public Health\nDr. Richard Jackson\, emeritus professor of public health at UCLA and former Director of the CDC National Center for Environmental Health and has argued that architects and planners can have more impact on the health of the next generation of kids than all the physicians in the world. His words are best proven correct through the work of renowned architect Michael Murphy of MASS Design Group\, dedicated to the construction of dignity and rooted in healthcare design. Listen in on their conversation reinvigorating what it means today to design for health\, safety\, and welfare. \nSpeakers\nDr. Richard Jackson\nProfessor emeritus at the Fielding School of Public Health at UCLA\, where he was Chair in Environmental Health Science. A pediatrician\, he has served in many leadership positions with the California Health Department\, including the highest as the State Health Officer. For nine years he was Director of the CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health and received the Presidential Distinguished Service Award. He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine. Dick Jackson lectures and speaks on many issues\, particularly those related to Climate Heating\, Built Environment\, and Health. He has served on numerous environmental and health boards\, as well as the Board of Directors of the AIA. He is an elected Honorary Fellow of the AIA and elected Honorary Fellow of the ASLA. \nMichael Murphy\, Int FRIBA\nFounding Principal and Executive Director of MASS Design Group\, a collective of architecture and design advocates dedicated to the construction of dignity. His portfolio documents work in over a dozen countries and spans the areas of healthcare\, education\, housing\, urban development\, food systems\, Indigenous sovereignty\, and the public monument. His 2016 TED talk has over a million views\, he was awarded the Al Filipov Medal for Peace and Justice in 2017\, and was recently awarded the position of Ventulett Distinguished Chair in Architectural Design at Georgia Tech. Under Michael’s guidance\, MASS has been awarded globally and their design of the National Memorial for Peace and Justice was named the “single greatest work of American architecture in the 21st century” by critic Mark Lamster. \nLearning Objectives\n\nThrough Dr. Jackson’s presentation\, attendees will be able to prioritize ways in which their designs of the built environment can better perform as preventive health measures and promote healthy activity and wellness. the invigorate their understanding on the impact of the built environment on physical health\, mental health\, safety and wellbeing through new research carried out in the field of public health\nThrough Michael Murphy’s descriptions of the impact of MASS Design’s healthcare facilities in Africa\, attendees will be able to catalyze small projects into broader impacts on economic growth\, social change\, and justice.\nThrough the discussion between Dr. Jackson and Michael Murphy of MASS Design’s One Health design strategy\, attendees will learn how to connect productive habitats for human\, animal\, and ecological growth.\nThe sessions’ combination of new research into climate change’s impact on health and specific case studies will enable attendees to discuss the global need for architects and planners to attend to the broad range of public health impacts – including personal health and safety\, mental health\, and planetary health.\n\nAll are welcome. \nRegister Here
