DESCRIPTION:Recognizing the importance of ethics education for local government decision makers\, planners\, planning commissions\, boards of zoning\, as well as local government staff who work on comprehensive planning\, zoning appeals\, or architectural review\, the Carl Vinson Institute of Government and GPA are offering a six-hour ethics class for planners and planning officials. \nKey topics covered in the “201” course include: \n\nThe purpose and goals of the AICP Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct and their relationship to ethical dilemmas and decisions in planning.\nHow values\, morality\, virtue\, character\, and obligations play out in our everyday actions and decisions.\nHow ethical dilemmas can arise whenever discretion is involved in policy or administrative decision making.\nHow to apply principles of ethical decision making to resolve dilemmas.\nThe moral dimensions\, goals\, virtues\, and temptations of leadership.\nHow public service is a moral and ethical enterprise.\n\nThe class will be held on February 10\, 2017\, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm\, at the UGA Gwinnett Campus\, 2530 Sever Road\, Lawrenceville\, Room #165. DESCRIPTION:There is an upcoming 8 CM Resilient Places symposium scheduled for February 24-25 in Asheville\, NC that will include a 1.5 CM session on Planning Law (to meet AICP law CM requirements). Come hear from a practicing attorney and Ohio State professor on planning law\, a NOAA climate scientist on our future climate\, an expert in the field of green infrastructure finance\, and a facilitator of multiple climate adaptation plans\, as well as learn about climate effects on transportation and resilient building and site design. \nAs a bonus\, after the conclusion of the first day of the symposium\, participants are invited to The Collider’s Beer City Science Pub (http://thecollider.org/events/event/beer-city-science-pub-6/) to learn about the Homo erectus migration out of Africa (presumably they were carefully vetted) while enjoying a beverage and small bites. \nThe cost of the 1.5 day event is $125 plus a small service charge.
