Noted climate change experts at the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia University and Widener University Law School published more than 1\,000 recommendations for achieving deep decarbonization. If so\, this workshop may be for you! \nThis workshop will bring together experts and participants to explore: \n\nThe considerations involved in\, and potential benefits of\, conducting a system redesign;\nThe system redesign process and phases;\nApproaches and tools – both fancy and simple! – that can be used to successfully carry out a system redesign.\n\nEach of these topics will be illustrated using case examples from around the country and engaging\, hands-on activities that will allow participants to explore the concepts and tools they can apply to their home systems. \nThe workshop will include two virtual half-day sessions\, each from Noon to 4:00 p.m. Eastern. The first session (June 15th) is intended for public transit agency staff and decision-makers at all levels\, focusing on formulating an approach for a redesign\, while the second session (June 16th) will be for more technical transit agency staff (service planners\, GIS analysts\, etc.)\, and will provide opportunities for hands-on exploration of tools that can support a redesign approach. \nThe registration form includes several survey questions. SUMMARY:World Town Planning Day at Georgia Tech
DESCRIPTION:The Georgia Tech Student Planning Association\, Black Lady Planners\, and the School of City and Regional Planning are excited to host Darryl Haddock of the West Atlanta Watershed Alliance (WAWA) for World Planning Day. The discussion will educate attendees on some equity and nature-based solutions for change and the WAWA Way.  \n\n\nWorld Town Planning Day is an opportunity to unite planners and celebrate planning around the globe. In November 2020\, WTPD focused on the social pillars of equity\, diversity\, and inclusion to create a space in which all community stakeholders can join together to find solutions to thrive after public health crises. This spring\, we aim to honor and continue to focus on this theme with our belated tribute to WTPD.   \nWAWA is a volunteer-run organization that partners with members of the West Atlanta community to protect greenspaces and water quality\, educate residents about environmental issues\, address racial disparities in environmental justice\, and steward natural lands and parks in Southwest Atlanta. WAWA fosters community organization centered on the people living near environmental stressors and highlighting the watershed’s ecological benefits. WAWA lifts communities up so they can speak in their own voices at decision-making tables.

In the U.S.\, the legacies of forced labor\, segregation\, and racial terror persist at the individual and institutional levels\, showing up in conditions such as mass incarceration\, voter suppression\, and inequitable development practices that lead to displacement. In this short course\, students will examine their understandings of equity\, justice\, and race using frameworks of inequality and place from leading scholars and practitioners. This short course will deepen the reflective practice of planning students through multi-media sources\, readings\, lectures\, and active discussions. It includes engagement with the New York Times’ 1619 Project\, the Equal Justice Initiative’s website and reports Lynching in America and Slavery in America\, and curriculum from Mississippi’s Freedom Summer in 1964. \nBy the end of this course\, participants will be able to \n\nShare their personal understanding of the relationship between the post-Civil War Southern response to integration and present-day inequalities\nExplain the role of enslavement\, Jim Crow laws\, lynching\, and segregation in the community and economic development of the South\nIdentify urban planning skills and capacities that can be improved with a more thorough understanding of history\nReflect critically on their role as planners in policymaking and economic development\, and the impact of conceptions of equity and justice in place-based work\n\nCommunication \nEnrolled students will be emailed the full 3-day schedule at the beginning of February\, including assignment descriptions and group assignments. \nPre-work \nParticipants will be assigned to read Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption\, Where Peachtree Meets Sweet Auburn: A Saga of Race and Family\, or Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent\, and then prepare a 1-page reading reflection before class starts on Thursday. \nFinal Deliverables (in class) \nGroups of participants will submit and present a combined product of reading reflection; lessons learned\, applications to planning practice\, and implications for Atlanta. \nFacilitators\nDr. Nisha Botchwey is an Associate Dean in Professional Education at Georgia Tech; Associate Professor of City and Regional Planning at Georgia Tech; and an adjunct professor in Emory University’s School of Public Health. \nDr. Botchwey’s research focuses on health\, equity\, and the built environment; youth development; community engagement; and data dashboards for evidence-based planning and practice. \nNene Igietseme is a 4th year Ph.D. student in City and Regional Planning at Georgia Tech.
