DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ariane Middel\, Arizona State University\, is a recent NSF CAREER recipient and will discuss the approach and methodology for her research as proposed in the CAREER project. She will present her published work based on a novel tool she has designed for measuring senseable heat called “MaRTy”. Her future project aims to build a model that simulates what MaRTy can measure. The discussion will focus on the residential neighborhood\, its history\, evolution and where it might be going into the future. The area was originally developed for mills and housed working class residents for years\, ultimately becoming a predominantly black neighborhood. It is now feeling the development pressure that is common in cities as they follow a re-urbanizing trend. We will contemplate these issues while enjoying an afternoon stroll. \nWe will be starting along the Firefly Trail\, approximately Little Oak St & Burney St. \nMasks are currently required in Athens-Clarke County (details are subject to change); however\, we will be taking all precautions. \nPlease contact Marc Beechuk to register. DESCRIPTION:Georgia Bikes has announced that its 11th Georgia Bikes Summit will be offered entirely online from September 17-19\, 2020. The event includes presentations and breakout sessions of interest to bicycle advocates\, community members\, business leaders\, planners and engineers\, elected officials\, and government staff members. In light of the increased bicycling during the pandemic\, Georgia Bikes decided to make the summit FREE to attend.  \nThe keynote speaker is Courtney Williams\, founder of The Brown Bike Girl\, a consultancy that works with institutions to increase bicycling access and adoption within communities of color\, and bicycling education for all. DESCRIPTION:GPA is teaming up with the Georgia Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects for a series of three “First Thursday” virtual webinars\, beginning in October. \nOctober 1 – Equity in the Commons\, presented by Lynn Ross of Spirit of Change\nNearly every trend line shows that the U.S. is in the grips of increased polarization\, segregation\, social isolation and economic inequality. There is an urgent need to reverse these trends in pursuit of more equitable communities and public spaces. Reimagining the Civic Commons is a national initiative that seeks to counter economic and social fragmentation in our cities by revitalizing and connecting public places to bring together people from different backgrounds. The Southern Georgia Regional Commission is hosting a virtual training event with guest speaker Elliott Caldwell\, executive director of Georgia Bikes. Free to attend. He is originally from Washington\, DC and first moved to Georgia as an undergraduate at Emory University in Atlanta. He returned in 2011 as a graduate student at the University of Georgia in Athens. He was an active Board member of BikeAthens while getting a Master of Social Work degree at UGA and grew to love Athens’ unique mix of walk/bike-ability\, live music\, great food\, and amazing country roads. He has a background both in bicycles (as a mechanic\, courier\, cyclocross racer\, and bikeshare worker) and grassroots community advocacy. After a brief detour back in DC\, he returned to Georgia as Georgia Bikes’ first Complete Streets Coordinator in January 2016 and took over as Executive Director in June 2017. \nAriel Godwin\, AICP is a planner at the Southern Georgia Regional Commission. Originally from New York State\, he learned to love the ups and downs of bicycling while riding across the Swiss Alps at age 17. Ariel has a master’s degree in planning from Ohio State University and has been working on Complete Streets policy and design for over 10 years. In 2019\, he created the Complete Streets policy that was adopted by the Valdosta-Lowndes Metropolitan Planning Organization. He has also created pedestrian and bicycle plans for several communities in southern Georgia.

DESCRIPTION:Each August\, GPA hosts a joint welcome reception at Georgia Tech for their planning students\, alumni\, and other GPA members. This year\, Georgia Tech will be having an online event instead of an in-person event due to COVID-19. But it’s not easy to grab a drink and do the usual networking that’s a part of this event if we’re all staring at a computer monitor. \nSo we decided to change things up this year. We’ll begin with a welcome from Georgia Tech and GPA leadership\, and then have a panel discussion on an important planning topic. This panel will focus on race and planning and how planners can more effectively work with underserved communities.
