DESCRIPTION:Georgia Bikes has announced that its 11th Georgia Bikes Summit will be offered entirely online from September 17-19\, 2020. The event includes presentations and breakout sessions of interest to bicycle advocates\, community members\, business leaders\, planners and engineers\, elected officials\, and government staff members. In light of the increased bicycling during the pandemic\, Georgia Bikes decided to make the summit FREE to attend.  \nThe keynote speaker is Courtney Williams\, founder of The Brown Bike Girl\, a consultancy that works with institutions to increase bicycling access and adoption within communities of color\, and bicycling education for all. He is originally from Washington\, DC and first moved to Georgia as an undergraduate at Emory University in Atlanta. He returned in 2011 as a graduate student at the University of Georgia in Athens. He was an active Board member of BikeAthens while getting a Master of Social Work degree at UGA and grew to love Athens’ unique mix of walk/bike-ability\, live music\, great food\, and amazing country roads. He has a background both in bicycles (as a mechanic\, courier\, cyclocross racer\, and bikeshare worker) and grassroots community advocacy. After a brief detour back in DC\, he returned to Georgia as Georgia Bikes’ first Complete Streets Coordinator in January 2016 and took over as Executive Director in June 2017. \nAriel Godwin\, AICP is a planner at the Southern Georgia Regional Commission. Originally from New York State\, he learned to love the ups and downs of bicycling while riding across the Swiss Alps at age 17. Ariel has a master’s degree in planning from Ohio State University and has been working on Complete Streets policy and design for over 10 years. In 2019\, he created the Complete Streets policy that was adopted by the Valdosta-Lowndes Metropolitan Planning Organization. He has also created pedestrian and bicycle plans for several communities in southern Georgia.

SUMMARY:Brownfields 102 – Identification and Planning Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The goal of this event is to increase the working knowledge of brownfields\, their effects on economic development\, and the policies and programs available to communities seeking to mitigate brownfield properties. Many planning professionals have very limited understanding of what constitutes a brownfield\, and even less knowledge about the resources available to assist with remediation. This session will help planners see how they can better inventory brownfields in their community and incorporate planning techniques that will aid in the eventual restoration of those properties for viable reuse. \nAmanda Heritt\, a brownfield specialist with the firm Terracon\, will review what constitutes a brownfield both legally and practically. This includes debunking the common perception that brownfields are only large\, older industrial properties with obvious contamination issues because too often communities miss or overlook other properties that may pose potent threats or miss opportunities to help address properties that aren’t assumed eligible for brownfield assistance. She’ll also discuss the benefits of brownfield remediation–environmental\, economic\, and social–as well as review the various programs and resources available to help communities actively assess and treat targeted properties.  \nAdam Hazell\, Planning Director for the GMRC\, will then review their efforts to inventory and catalog potential and existing brownfields in the region and the overall strategy to assist communities with remediation. DESCRIPTION:The Georgia Smart Communities Challenge (“Georgia Smart”) is a funding and technical assistance program for local governments within the State of Georgia. Georgia Smart is a first-of-its-kind opportunity for communities of any size in Georgia to receive grant funding and support that enables them to envision\, explore\, and plan for their “smart” future. Communities will be given financial assistance\, a partnership with a Georgia Tech research team\, networking opportunities\, and access to additional\, unique resources to execute their projects. DESCRIPTION:Due to COVID-19\, this has been postponed. Date TBD. \nThe eighth annual Atlanta Studies Symposium welcomes proposals on any aspect of Atlanta\, past\, present\, or future. Priority will be given to those that directly relate to the conference theme\, “Inclusive Innovation: Designing the Future of Atlanta.” \nIn June 2020\, the city of Atlanta will host the inaugural U.S. edition of the global Smart City Expo\, the world’s leading conference and expo on smart cities and smart urban solutions. City officials involved in this endeavor boast of their ability to “redefine what it means to be a smart city” while Atlanta researchers\, city planners\, and activists develop and investigate emerging technologies options to improve urban transportation in the City of Atlanta and the metro region. As the city hones in on its Smart City efforts\, how will art and design be utilized alongside technology to enhance its infrastructure and address issues of equity? With the metro region’s ever-growing population and increased awareness of its need for new innovative methods of development\, it is important for these methods to be inclusive and diverse to envision a more sustainable and equitable city and region. This symposium seeks to explore the points of intersection and division within Atlanta’s economic development\, population growth and increased creative potential. \nThis symposium poses the questions: \n\nHow does economic development affect art and design in Atlanta?\nHow does art and design impact the lived environment of the city?\nHow can city design address structural oppression and economic disparity?\nWhat are the ways art and design intersect with or address issues of equity in Atlanta?\nWhat role does art\, literature\, and music\, play in imagining alternative realities and radical futures for the city?\nHow is Atlanta redefining what it means to be a Smart city?\nHow is creative capital measured and cultivated within the city?\nWho is designing the future of the city? Who is included in this future?\n\nThis year\, we seek a diverse array of symposium sessions from scholars and practitioners at academic institutions\, as well as from other public\, private\, and nonprofit organizations. We welcome proposals for: \n\nFully constituted panels with up to 3 presenters and a moderator\nIndividual papers or posters\n5 minute/5 slide presentations that will be part of a lightning round session\nRoundtable discussions\nInteractive workshops\nFilm screenings\nAny other creative form of presentation you’d like to propose\n\nPlease submit abstracts via the link below no later than February 12\, 2020. \nSubmit Abstracts Here

This research has developed powerful techniques for spatial data creation\, capture\, and analysis. \nYet\, these fields were founded with technocratic and engineering problem-solving ideals. As such\, these programs and research agendas often operate without an explicit ‘plan’ for how technology and data analysis will tackle real world issues. \nTo help cities reach the most vulnerable citizens and improve daily life\, research questions and execution in this field need re-definition and intervention. \nJoin us at DISA to… \n\nGenerate solutions for how our research and teaching can include a more diverse body of tacit knowledge from the urban community.\nDiscuss how we can solve real-life problems with data analytics.\nDevelop strategies and recommend formal research frameworks to guide Urban Analytics and Smart Cities research towards championing citizen voices and helping people.\nEmpower urban analytics students and researchers to shape urban research questions\, methodologies and implementation in a way that positively impacts the city and its people.
