Designing communities with the senior in mind can provide improved opportunities for healthy transportation while preserving independence and dignity for people who wish to age in place. What’s more\, communities that work for our eldest populations benefit users of all abilities. \nThe CSRA Regional Commission will host a webinar viewing and discussion on Wednesday\, November 20th from 3-5pm at the RC office\, located at 3626 Walton Way Extension\, Suite 300 in Augusta\, GA. The RC has covered the cost of this webinar; it will be free to all who attend the viewing at our office. SUMMARY:World Town Planning Day - Building Equity: Lessons in Sustainability from Community to College Campuses
DESCRIPTION:Join the School of City & Regional Planning\, the Student Planning Association\, and Diana Hernández\, our featured guest\, as we celebrate World Town Planning Day in Georgia Tech’s new Living Building\, the Kendeda Building. For more information on the Kendeda Building and the Living Building Challenge\, please visit their website. \nDiana Hernández is an Assistant Professor of Sociomedical Sciences at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. She is also the Director of the Community Engagement Core of the NIEHS-funded Center for Environmental Health in Northern Manhattan. \nBuilding Equity: Lessons in Sustainability from Community to College Campuses\nBuildings represent a middle ground between high-level and small-scale infrastructure. For this reason\, they embody specific factors at the intersection of equity and opportunity. For example\, recent studies show a correlation between energy efficiency upgrades\, usually of interest only to the landlord; and the likelihood of tenant financial burdens and disconnection notices for energy bills. Correlations such as these at the building scale can help reveal otherwise unseen implications of transitions to less environmentally impactful energy technologies. The idea of “just transitions” will be explored in this context\, as will comparative approaches from different segments of the US population from college campuses to community settings. \nRegister Here

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a freewheeling conversation about The Death and Life of Great American Cities by Jane Jacobs led by anthropologist\, architect\, and city planner\, Richard Dagenhart. The retired Georgia Tech professor discovers something new with each read. “It is one of those books.” He recommends reading one chapter\, “The Kind of a Problem a City Is” first\, although it is at the end of the book. \nDagenhart was educated at the Universities of Arkansas and Pennsylvania. For 40 plus years\, he has been involved in urban design teaching\, research and practice in Philadelphia\, Houston\, the Middle East\, across much of the US\, China\, and in Atlanta. Although retired\, he continues to teach urban design studios and an Institute-wide course on the history of cities at Georgia Tech. The urban design studios at Georgia Tech\, collaborating with graduate students from across the world\, are sponsored by the Georgia Conservancy to investigate issues of climate change\, re-purposing infrastructure\, and retro-fitting automobile landscapes in the American City\, especially Atlanta and Georgia. Dagenhart is a registered architect and maintains a small architectural practice in Atlanta and Apalachicola\, Florida. \nIf you are concerned about protecting and conserving Georgia’s precious places\, join the Staff of the Georgia Conservancy for the Green Reads Book Club on the third Wednesday of every month. DESCRIPTION:Please join representatives from ACCG\, GMA\, AT&T and Verizon on August 12th for a training workshop on Georgia’s new small cell permitting law. The “Streamlining Wireless Facilities and Antennas Act”\, effective October 1\, 2019\, resulted from two years of negotiations between wireless providers and local governments. It establishes a statewide\, streamlined process covering all aspects of the permitting of small cell poles\, antennas and equipment in local governments’ rights-of-way. The workshop will review the new small cell technology; various aspects of the law that local governments must know; local permitting conditions and requirements; what can be expected in the roll out of small cells; and crafting appropriate local ordinances to comply with the law. \nRegister Here

DESCRIPTION:Randall Arendt\, author of “Rural By Design”\, will lead a workshop in conservation subdivision design.\n \nRandall Arendt is a landscape planner\, site designer\, author\, lecturer\, and an advocate of “conservation planning.” Mr. Arendt has designed “conservation subdivisions” for a wide variety of clients in 21 states and several Canadian provinces. His designs are “twice green” because they succeed both environmentally and economically. \nMr. Arendt is the country’s most sought-after speaker on the topic of creative development design as a conservation tool. He has been featured as a key speaker at national conferences sponsored by the American Planning Association\, the Urban Land Institute\, the American Farmland Trust\, the American Society of Landscape Architects\, the National Association of Home Builders\, the Land Trust Alliance\, the US EPA\, and the Canadian institute of Planners. DESCRIPTION:Atlanta Streets Alive opens streets for people by taking cars out of the equation for an afternoon to create a healthy\, sustainable and vibrant city street experience. On June 9\, Atlanta Streets Alive will open nearly 9 miles of Howell Mill Road\, Marietta Street\, Decatur Street\, and DeKalb Avenue for the special Cross-City route.  \nEPG will be volunteering Downtown from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM as Crosswalk Heroes\, which support Atlanta Streets Alive by holding positions near main intersections and at any hazards along the route to aid participants with navigating the route safely. They also answer questions about the route and the day’s activities. The Institute provides information about planning for land use\, growth and development. SUMMARY:Smart Cities Dialogue: Building Inclusive Communities and Partnerships
DESCRIPTION:The Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) will hold a two-day Smart Cities Dialogue on May 7-8\, 2019 to help frame the debate on this paradigm. It will discuss how to develop smarter communities that understand urban life primarily as a social\, and only secondarily as a technical and logistic ecosystem. Topics will capture inclusive engagement\, smaller communities that may not see themselves as part of the “smart cities” effort\, social and socioeconomic mobility as well as connections within economic regions.In addition to bringing together key national and international stakeholders from local governments as well as industry and academic leaders for a series of insightful discussions\, attendees will have the opportunity to experience ‘research in action’ and discover some of Georgia Tech’s latest solutions in this domain.This conference is intended for government representatives\, smart cities experts and researchers\, policy makers as well as industry leaders interested in this topic and in accessing Georgia Tech’s cross-disciplinary R&D capabilities. \nThis is generously funded by the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs and the Strategic Energy Institute\, as well as supported by Professional Education\, School of Public Policy\, and School of Civil and Environmental Engineering. It is part of a ongoing infrastructure series sponsored by our GT distinguished-professors-of-the-practice\, John Rice (recently retired Vice-Chairman of the General Electric Company)\, and Dennis Lockhart (recently retired president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta). \nIt is also part of our larger GT Smart Cities and Inclusive Innovation Initiative that aims to drive smart cities research and education across campus and beyond into all communities and practice.
