DESCRIPTION:Please join representatives from ACCG\, GMA\, AT&T and Verizon on August 12th for a training workshop on Georgia’s new small cell permitting law. The “Streamlining Wireless Facilities and Antennas Act”\, effective October 1\, 2019\, resulted from two years of negotiations between wireless providers and local governments. It establishes a statewide\, streamlined process covering all aspects of the permitting of small cell poles\, antennas and equipment in local governments’ rights-of-way. The workshop will review the new small cell technology; various aspects of the law that local governments must know; local permitting conditions and requirements; what can be expected in the roll out of small cells; and crafting appropriate local ordinances to comply with the law. \nRegister Here

DESCRIPTION:Randall Arendt\, author of “Rural By Design”\, will lead a workshop in conservation subdivision design.\n \nRandall Arendt is a landscape planner\, site designer\, author\, lecturer\, and an advocate of “conservation planning.” Mr. Arendt has designed “conservation subdivisions” for a wide variety of clients in 21 states and several Canadian provinces. His designs are “twice green” because they succeed both environmentally and economically. \nMr. Arendt is the country’s most sought-after speaker on the topic of creative development design as a conservation tool. He has been featured as a key speaker at national conferences sponsored by the American Planning Association\, the Urban Land Institute\, the American Farmland Trust\, the American Society of Landscape Architects\, the National Association of Home Builders\, the Land Trust Alliance\, the US EPA\, and the Canadian institute of Planners. On June 9\, Atlanta Streets Alive will open nearly 9 miles of Howell Mill Road\, Marietta Street\, Decatur Street\, and DeKalb Avenue for the special Cross-City route.  \nEPG will be volunteering Downtown from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM as Crosswalk Heroes\, which support Atlanta Streets Alive by holding positions near main intersections and at any hazards along the route to aid participants with navigating the route safely. They also answer questions about the route and the day’s activities. DESCRIPTION:The Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) will hold a two-day Smart Cities Dialogue on May 7-8\, 2019 to help frame the debate on this paradigm. It will discuss how to develop smarter communities that understand urban life primarily as a social\, and only secondarily as a technical and logistic ecosystem. Topics will capture inclusive engagement\, smaller communities that may not see themselves as part of the “smart cities” effort\, social and socioeconomic mobility as well as connections within economic regions.In addition to bringing together key national and international stakeholders from local governments as well as industry and academic leaders for a series of insightful discussions\, attendees will have the opportunity to experience ‘research in action’ and discover some of Georgia Tech’s latest solutions in this domain.This conference is intended for government representatives\, smart cities experts and researchers\, policy makers as well as industry leaders interested in this topic and in accessing Georgia Tech’s cross-disciplinary R&D capabilities. \nThis is generously funded by the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs and the Strategic Energy Institute\, as well as supported by Professional Education\, School of Public Policy\, and School of Civil and Environmental Engineering. DESCRIPTION:Please join us on April 9\, 2019 for the seventh annual Atlanta Studies Symposium\, which will be hosted by the Georgia Institute of Technology and held at the Academy of Medicine (875 West Peachtree St.\, NW). In keeping with this year’s theme\, “Atlanta in the Anthropocene: The Making of a Resilient\, Resourceful City\,” the symposium will bring together scholars from across the region to discuss Atlanta’s role in climate mitigation\, and how Atlanta might respond to coming challenges. The symposium will also feature keynote addresses from J. Marshall Shepherd (University of Georgia) and Bartow Elmore (Ohio State University). \nThe Atlanta Studies Symposium is free and open to the public\, however\, we request that you register in advance so that we can accurately gauge seating and food needs.

SUMMARY:Historic Chicopee Mill & Village and Chicopee Woods: A Comprehensive Perspective
DESCRIPTION:This event will build on last year’s gathering of planners\, landscape architects and architects at this same location in April\, which focused on the core area of historic Chicopee Village. The event\, offering 4 hours of AICP credits\, begins with a driving tour of the entire property\, including most of the watershed purchased by Johnson & Johnson (J&J) to create Chicopee Mill. Stops include the many recreational amenities in Chicopee Woods (CW) Park\, Elachee Nature Science Center\, CW Golf Course\, and other points of interest. Lectures follow at Elachee and cover two topics: (1) the conservation ethic that began when J&J created Chicopee and how it continues today; and (2) Historic Preservation Law and Economic Incentives. The social at Left Nut Brewery\, located in the historic mill office and machine shop\, will feature pies and sides from “Pouch Pies” of Athens and craft beers and ciders and non-alcoholic selections. \nParticipants are encouraged to make a day of it and come early. Play a round of golf; explore the challenging mountain bike trails\, maintained by the local chapter of SOBRA (Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association); walk or bike the Chicopee segment of the Highlands to Islands Trail network\, a paved concrete trail; or hike the nature trails in the Elachee preserve. \nThis event is FREE to members of GPA\, GAASLA\, and AIA. \nEarn 4 hours of AICP credits. \nLearn More or Register
