DESCRIPTION:Grab a beer and join guest speaker Kevin Burke\, Principal Landscape Architect with Atlanta Beltline\, Inc.\, as he shares some of his insights into how the Atlanta Beltline is spurring billions of dollars of economic development and the creation of thousands of jobs in the City of Atlanta by connecting neighborhoods to miles of multi-use trails\, parks\, and unique urban landscapes. \nThe Atlanta BeltLine is the most comprehensive transportation and economic development effort ever undertaken in the City of Atlanta and among the largest\, most wide-ranging urban redevelopment programs currently underway in the United States. It will ultimately connect 45 intown neighborhoods via a 22-mile loop of multi-use trails\, modern streetcar\, and parks – all based on railroad corridors that formerly encircled Atlanta. This year’s conference theme is “Resilience Planning: Building Healthier\, More Equitable and Vibrant Communities”. \nThis year’s conference will focus on the fundamental elements required for communities to thrive in complex urban environments. This focus will address creating sustainable urban communities that are resilient to social\, economic\, and environmental uncertainties at local\, national and global levels. As planning professionals\, it is crucial that we promote healthier\, more equitable\, and economically vibrant communities. This requires innovative and inclusive approach to urban planning that will establish a desirable built environment\, generate economic opportunities\, protect natural resources\, promote historic preservation\, provide transportation options\, ensure affordable quality housing\, and support a high quality of life for all communities. \nThe keynote speaker is Tom Sanchez\, PhD. Chair and Professor of Urban Affairs and Planning at Virginia Tech. Dr. Sanchez’s keynote speech title is “Smart Cities\, Transport\, and Social Equity”. He will present and discuss how rapid changes in technology hold great promise for cities and regions around the world. This is especially true for critical infrastructure such as those supporting transport systems. Efficiency resulting from “smarter” data collection\, connectivity\, and overall intelligence are expected to optimize transport mobility and access. He will discuss how it will be important for planners to consider who will benefit from these investments\, and how equity and fairness will play a role in the future of cities. \nAll sessions are open to the public and pending approval by the APA for the CM Credits. AICP holders can receive up to 6 hours of CM credits from the conference. DESCRIPTION:Thanks to a grant from the Georgia Planning Memorial Foundation (GPMF)\, there is a free planning & zoning training opportunity for appointed Board members (Planning Commissioners\, Board of Zoning Appeals members) on November 14 in Calhoun. \nThe event is a partnership between GPA\, GPMF\, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA)\, and Northwest Georgia Regional Commission (NWGRC). The event\, to last from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM\, will be held at the Gordon County Agricultural Service Center\, 1282 GA-53 Spur\, Calhoun. \nThe idea for this initiative\, intended to serve as a test event for possible future trainings for Planning Commissioners and Board of Zoning Appeals members\, originated with GPA and GPMF Board members. The intention is to offer affordable one-day training events for community decision-makers who review proposed rezonings\, variances\, special use cases\, and other matters.
