Through inspiring plenary sessions\, interactive panels\, mobile workshops\, and caucuses\, participants will strategize on how to accelerate the adoption of integrated\, sustainable\, and inclusive approaches to water resource management. \nAll across the country\, one water approaches are progressing on multiple fronts—recovering precious nutrients and energy from wastewater; using green stormwater techniques to address flooding while beautifying neighborhoods; diversifying local water supplies through large scale water reuse and recycling; watershed level collaboration to address pressing water quality and quantity issues; and much more. DESCRIPTION:To be mobile is to have the ability to move. It is to move across space\, from one neighborhood to another\, perhaps\, or across social categories of well-being\, such as from the working poor to the middle-class. The challenges to mobility in Atlanta—whether physical or social—remain a key concern for residents\, policymakers\, and scholars from a variety of disciplines. As the city flourishes in some places for some people\, it declines in other places\, where residents suffer. At once Atlanta is boundless in its hope and tragic in its despair. \nFor the fourth annual Atlanta Studies Symposium\, to be held at Georgia State University on May 11th\, 2016\, we invite scholars and activists to learn from and act on research about Atlanta’s mobilities\, including that of its central city and the broader metropolitan area. We seek panels and paper presentations that address the challenges and opportunities for Atlanta’s past\, present\, and future mobilities. \nWe welcome fully-constituted panels of three to five paper presentations\, which should include a cover letter indicating the focus of the panel and its participants. We also welcome individual papers or posters for consideration in the symposium. Please submit 250-word abstracts for paper presentations on this form no later than January 31\, 2016. DESCRIPTION:Planning across Generations: Deconstructing the Past\, Shaping the Future\nRegistration is now open for the 2016 Urban Planning Conference at Savannah State University The conference titled “Planning across Generations: Deconstructing the Past\, Shaping the Future” will take place on Friday\, April 1\, 2016 from 8:00 a.m. – 4:15 p.m. in the new Student Union at Savannah State University campus and on Saturday\, April 2\, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. – noon at the Kennedy Pharmacy in downtown Savannah. \nThe conference will explore the nexus of past and future facing today’s planners and policymakers from an interdisciplinary perspective and learn how planners can avoid repeating past mistakes that have led to unjust\, unsustainable\, and unhealthy cities present today. On the first day\, we will have a series of presentation sessions. The keynote speaker is Kevin J. Krizek\, Ph.D.\, professor and director of the Environmental Design Program at the University of Colorado Boulder. Dr. Krizek actively publishes in the areas of travel behavior\, neighborhood accessibility\, health and planning\, and sustainable development. Also featured is Anh Nguyen\, a data dissemination specialist of the U.S. Census Bureau\, who will share the updates to databases and mapping tools. One of the DURP family members\, Kristin Murray\, a PhD candidate\, will present her research titled “Revitalization through Sport Olympic Legacies and Their Impacts on Host Cities”. \nOn the second day of the conference\, we will have two-hour mobile workshop highlights the past\, present and future of Savannah’s downtown and will wind its way through the historic landmark district and then on to revitalization projects on Broughton Street\, Bay Street and the waterfront. Learn how planners\, urban designers and developers are working to balance preservation and transformation. \nAll sessions are open to the public. All participants must register and pay the conference fees of $50.00 (regular participants) or $75.00 (AICP participants who are seeking CM credits). SUMMARY:Planning for Aging Septic Systems
DESCRIPTION:Aging septic systems are a threat to human health\, water quality\, and the environment. Athens-Clarke County plunged in to solve the issue with funds from an EPD Grant in conjunction with the Upper Oconee Water Planning Council. \nWhere:Athens-Clarke County Planning Department Auditorium120 W. Dougherty StreetAthens\, GA 30601 \nWhen:Friday\, January 8 from 3:00 – 5:00 PM followed by an optional networking opportunity at Creature Comforts Brewery. \nAthens-Clarke County (ACC) has nineteen stream segments listed on the EPD 303(d) list for fecal coliform contamination. Using funds from a 319 Grant\, ACC developed a program to address the issue. \nThe creation of the septic inventory\, education campaign\, and the water quality monitoring program has successfully helped ACC understand the impacts of failing septic systems and to work on de-listing impaired streams. It also demonstrated the lack of septic system knowledge pushing ACC staff to continue the education efforts through the Clarke County Health Department and ACC Stormwater Program. The Septic System inventory and educational materials will be used as a template for communities throughout the state of Georgia and made available to session participants. \nFor more information and to register email marilyn.hall@athensclarkecounty.com

DESCRIPTION:The Georgia Tech Student Planning Association would like to officially invite you to be a part of World Town Planning Day 2015 on Nov 9 at 6:30pm in the College of Architecture Auditorium.  \nAs we continue the tradition of hosting compelling panel discussions on timely and relevant planning issues in Atlanta\, this year’s topic will ask “Who Owns the Streets?”  \nAs Atlanta moves away from a principally car-focused orientation for its roads and looks towards more complete streets\, how can planners and designers equitably distribute these physical spaces between different uses and users? Who should have the authority to make decisions about streets– the parties that own them\, the current users that take advantage of them\, potential future users\, or the communities through which the roads run and often play a large part in defining? Moving in this direction\, there does not seem to be an understood precedent on many of this issues\, and this has been made clear through the clashes surrounding the addition of bike lanes\, in conversations about transit priority\, and even in the debate about painting rainbow crosswalks at intersections.
