DESCRIPTION:The Master of Science in Urban Studies and Planning program at Savannah State University (SSU) will host the fifth annual Urban Planning Conference from 7:30 a.m.- 4:15 p.m. on Friday\, March 31\, 2017\, in the new Student Union.. This year’s conference theme is “Equity Planning: Creating Diverse and Inclusive Communities”.\n \nThis year’s conference will focus on equity planning to address the widening gap between prosperous communities and those that continue to be disenfranchised. Despite the growth and positive transformation that have occurred in many rural and urban areas over the past few decades\, a significant segment of the American population live in substandard conditions. As planning professionals\, it is crucial that we promote equitable development and advocate for policies and practices that mitigate systemic inequities in housing\, transportation\, economic opportunities\, and living environments.\n \nThe keynote speaker is Matias Valenzuela\, Ph.D.\, the Director of the Office of Equity and Social Justice in King County\, WA. His office is a countywide effort to address the root causes of inequities working with all county agencies and the community. He will present and discuss the implementation of The Equity and Social Justice Strategic Plan that collectively established a set of values to achieve a goal of equity and social justice for all residents of King County\, Washington.\n \nAll sessions are open to the public. All participants must register and pay the conference fees of $50 (presenters and regular participants) or $75 (AICP participants who are seeking CM Credits). DESCRIPTION:Larry Holland of Fishbone Art and organizer of Secret Doors Decatur\, with the support of the Decatur Arts Alliance and the Decatur Downtown Development Authority\, is back at it with a new public art initiative: the Decatur Box Project. You may have seen the handful of traffic signal boxes at intersections around town that have been transformed from their drab\, gray and corroded metal into colorful\, whimsical works of art. What a fun addition to Decatur’s outdoor gallery! \nPhase one was completed with boxes designed and painted by local artists Larry Holland\, Nick Madden\, Gerry ‘Madness’ Gorman and Catlanta. Now in its second and final phase\, 23 artists have been selected to bring more boxes to life in and around downtown Decatur. \nWe’ll begin with a talk at the Decatur City Hall and then set out on a one-mile loop walking tour to see and hear about 8 transformed boxes. DESCRIPTION:PARK(ing) Day is an international event that tasks individuals and organizations to reuse a metered street parking space for something other than its intended use to spark a conversation about how public space is designed and allocated. This year\, Georgia Tech is partnering with the Midtown Alliance and other local organizations to transform 26 parking spaces into activated public spaces along 5th Street in Tech Square. The event will take place on Friday\, September 16 from 11:00am to 3:00pm and will feature various booths from the King of Pops to food vendors. Bicycle parking will be provided. \n The Student Planning Association at Georgia Tech is seeking organizations or groups to help transform the parking spaces into temporary public spaces.
