DESCRIPTION:YPG is hosting an educational event at Blue Heron Nature Preserve (BHNP)\, located in the North Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta\, on July 30\, 2015\, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. We have applied for CM Credits for AICP. There is limited space\, and we must cap the attendance at 25 people\, so please RSVP by no later than July 28\, 2015\, at 5:00 PM\, if you plan to attend. Email Sarah McColley with questions and to RSVP.  \nNancy Jones\, the BHNP Executive Director\, and Kevin McCauley\, the Project Director\, will give a presentation about the planning opportunities that BHNP is currently addressing and the history of the Preserve’s creation. After this presentation\, we will walk a portion of the Preserve and learn more about the Preserve and ecological systems. The presentation will also describe the continued expansion of the BHNP\, which involves local activism and multiple organizational partnerships. Currently\, BHNP is finalizing the updates to their master plan and have addressed the need to connect to adjacent parks and trails\, add programming and facilities\, and restore habitat on-site. The consulting firm of Looney Ricks Kiss has been hired to assist the City with establishing a vision for a timeless civic building that is fully integrated into the community. DESCRIPTION:This interdisciplinary meeting of scholars and activists\, now in its third year\, is organized by Emory University’s Center for Digital Scholarship\, Georgia State University’s Cities Initiative and Department of Geosciences\, and Georgia Tech’s schools of Architecture\, Building Construction\, City and Regional Planning\, Civil and Environmental Engineering\, History\, Technology and Society\, and Public Policy. The day-long symposium will be held at Georgia Tech’s Historic Academy of Medicine in midtown Atlanta. \nAtlanta has long been portrayed as a city governed by a moderate\, biracial coalition of business-oriented elites quietly collaborating around major initiatives – the so-called “Atlanta Way.” In the current era\, Atlanta faces a variety of challenges: the legacy of the foreclosure crisis and great recession; fragmentation of local government; congestion and sprawl; widening inequality; the challenge to embrace sustainable environmental practices; and the goal of providing quality public education. What is the nature of the challenges facing Atlanta? DESCRIPTION:During two days\, participants gain an in-depth understanding of urban form for a regulatory framework. Instructors show how to create form-based codes that frame the public space. They show how to conceptualize the urban character of a street by drawing upon an area’s historic form. Instructors present design principles through lecture and case study\, combining these with “hands-on” participatory exercises to create the basic elements of a form-based code. Participants learn how to create and use building form and public space standards within a regulating plan. The class explores design possibilities for greenfield sites\, redevelopment sites\, already built-out communities and regional plans.
