DESCRIPTION:Larry Holland of Fishbone Art and organizer of Secret Doors Decatur\, with the support of the Decatur Arts Alliance and the Decatur Downtown Development Authority\, is back at it with a new public art initiative: the Decatur Box Project. You may have seen the handful of traffic signal boxes at intersections around town that have been transformed from their drab\, gray and corroded metal into colorful\, whimsical works of art. What a fun addition to Decatur’s outdoor gallery! \nPhase one was completed with boxes designed and painted by local artists Larry Holland\, Nick Madden\, Gerry ‘Madness’ Gorman and Catlanta. Now in its second and final phase\, 23 artists have been selected to bring more boxes to life in and around downtown Decatur. \nWe’ll begin with a talk at the Decatur City Hall and then set out on a one-mile loop walking tour to see and hear about 8 transformed boxes. This year\, Georgia Tech is partnering with the Midtown Alliance and other local organizations to transform 26 parking spaces into activated public spaces along 5th Street in Tech Square. The event will take place on Friday\, September 16 from 11:00am to 3:00pm and will feature various booths from the King of Pops to food vendors. Bicycle parking will be provided. \n The Student Planning Association at Georgia Tech is seeking organizations or groups to help transform the parking spaces into temporary public spaces. DESCRIPTION:To be mobile is to have the ability to move. It is to move across space\, from one neighborhood to another\, perhaps\, or across social categories of well-being\, such as from the working poor to the middle-class. The challenges to mobility in Atlanta—whether physical or social—remain a key concern for residents\, policymakers\, and scholars from a variety of disciplines. As the city flourishes in some places for some people\, it declines in other places\, where residents suffer. At once Atlanta is boundless in its hope and tragic in its despair. \nFor the fourth annual Atlanta Studies Symposium\, to be held at Georgia State University on May 11th\, 2016\, we invite scholars and activists to learn from and act on research about Atlanta’s mobilities\, including that of its central city and the broader metropolitan area. We seek panels and paper presentations that address the challenges and opportunities for Atlanta’s past\, present\, and future mobilities. \nWe welcome fully-constituted panels of three to five paper presentations\, which should include a cover letter indicating the focus of the panel and its participants. We also welcome individual papers or posters for consideration in the symposium. Please submit 250-word abstracts for paper presentations on this form no later than January 31\, 2016.
