SUMMARY:Michael Batty: Visualizing Smart City Technologies
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will outline the rapid development of new tools for visualising cities and their functions with an emphasis on how they can be used in the analytical phases of urban design. It will embed these new developments in geo-visualisation within the development of tools for extracting new data – big and open data for example\, with new forms of analytics that are being fashioned to study and plan for the development of smart cities where a focus on short term change is to the fore. We begin with the most obvious examples of digital visualisation – 2D and 3D maps – from geographic information systems (GIS) and computer-aided design (CAD) technologies. These merge into augmented and virtual realities and imply that much of what has been developed for desktop applications is now shifting to the web. We then examine networks\, noting the early development of space syntax but then moving to flow systems of various kinds that record interaction between the elements of a design. We look at models of flows\, specifically traffic and pedestrian movement and then consider how new social media produced in real time is being used to inform small-scale interactions at the level of spatial and social networks. Scientific visualisation is also affecting design in that more abstract infographics are being used to display and visualise the complexity of design\, and to this end\, we show various new forms of network and connectivity. Finally we note how real time data is being delivered to designers using various forms of dashboard which summarise how cities are performing and we conclude by suggesting that these new kinds of visualisation are beginning to enrich the field of urban design by innovative display of ideas and their access through online participation. \nProfessor Michael Batty is Bartlett Professor of Planning at University College London where he is Chair of the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA). He has worked on applying computers to cities and has published several books from Urban Modelling (CUP\, 1976) to Cities and Complexity (MIT Press\, 2005) and most recently The New Science of Cities (MIT Press\, 2013). His blogs www.complexcity.info cover the science underpinning the technology of cities and his posts and lectures on big data and smart cities are at www.spatialcomplexity.info. His research group works on applications of computer models of various kinds to large cities with a strong focus on visualisation and dissemination using the latest digital technologies. He is the editor of Environment and Planning B.

DESCRIPTION:Are you looking for more CM credits?\nThrough he GPA CM Partnership Program we have are working with Georgia Bikes! to bring you 4 events throughout the state. \nA workshop in Valdosta (8/21) is designed for transportation directors\, engineers\, planners\, and elected officials and will focus on implementing road diets and refuge islands for improved bicyclist safety. Experts from ALTA Planning\, GDOT\, and Georgia Bikes will share case studies and design guidance for road diets and refuge islands\, as well as additional design recommendations from AASHTO and the NACTO Urban Bikeway Design Guide. \nFrom 2011 to 2012\, bicyclist fatalities rose more than 50% in Georgia. 2012 to 2013 saw an additional 37% increase in bicyclist fatalities. Urban arterial roads often pose significant risks to bicyclist safety due to high motor vehicle speeds and traffic volume\, but there are proven design countermeasures that effectively address safety and access for all roadway users. \nThis training supports the vision and goals of the state’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan\, Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Action Plan\, and GDOT’s Complete Streets Design Policy adopted in 2012. Funding for this training is generously provided by FHWA’s Accelerating Safety Activities Program. The training is free and will include site visits to relevant local roadways. Space is limited to 30 participants. \nThis event has been approved for 4 CM credits. This event will also be repeated in Milledgeville (8/13)\, Albany (8/20) and Macon (9/18)\, CM credits have been applied for. Register for these events for free online at www.georgiabikes.org.

SUMMARY:Living Beyond Expectations: Tactical Urbanism
DESCRIPTION:What is Tactical Urbanism and how can it help revitalize our cities? How do older adults experience the aging process\, and still desire to remain active in their communities? And how do these two ideas connect? \nThis workshop will provide an overview of the concept of Tactical Urbanism – in use in many cities through- out the world as a way to engage residents in reclaiming spaces for all users. Participants will then be invited to see this concept – and the resulting build-out and project demonstration – through the lens of older adults. Those in attendance will come away with a better understanding of this concept and how it will be implemented on the ground in concert with the Old 4th Ward community of Atlanta. \nThis training will feature Mike Lydon\, internationally recognized planner and expert in the field. Lydon has been featured on CNN\, The New York Times\, and NPR for his work on livable cities. DESCRIPTION:The “Georgia Hoedown” will include a full meal\, two drink tickets and great entertainment from “The After Party” band! A traditional southern dinner buffet includes barbeque chicken and pork\, macaroni and cheese\, collard greens\, hush puppies\, peach cobbler and pecan pie. The After Party will play crowd favorites including Beatles\, Journey\, Tom Petty\, Gin Blossoms and The Cure.  \nThe Georgia Railroad Freight Depot was completed in April of 1869\, and is one of the oldest buildings in downtown Atlanta. The brick building served as the main freight depot for the Georgia Railroad and was restored by the Georgia Building Authority in 1981. Large rolling barn doors and period lighting are sure to add ambiance to the event.
