Experts from ALTA Planning\, GDOT\, and Georgia Bikes will share case studies and design guidance for road diets and refuge islands\, as well as additional design recommendations from AASHTO and the NACTO Urban Bikeway Design Guide. \nFrom 2011 to 2012\, bicyclist fatalities rose more than 50% in Georgia. 2012 to 2013 saw an additional 37% increase in bicyclist fatalities. Urban arterial roads often pose significant risks to bicyclist safety due to high motor vehicle speeds and traffic volume\, but there are proven design countermeasures that effectively address safety and access for all roadway users. \nThis training supports the vision and goals of the state’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan\, Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Action Plan\, and GDOT’s Complete Streets Design Policy adopted in 2012. Funding for this training is generously provided by FHWA’s Accelerating Safety Activities Program. The training is free and will include site visits to relevant local roadways. Space is limited to 30 participants. \nThis event has been approved for 4 CM credits. DESCRIPTION:Planners can obtain APA credits for attending a one-day workshop hosted by UGA’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government in Savannah\, GA on Aug. 28\, 2014. Homeowners are facing rising flood insurance rates. Local governments can create insurance discounts for their communities by participating in the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Community Rating System (CRS) program and earn CRS credits for flood control measures and community outreach. \nThis workshop will help planners and local governments learn how to successfully earn CRS credits for their community. The workshop will focus on three key areas: open space\, regulatory standards\, and voluntary property acquisition programs.

SUMMARY:Living Beyond Expectations: Tactical Urbanism
DESCRIPTION:What is Tactical Urbanism and how can it help revitalize our cities? How do older adults experience the aging process\, and still desire to remain active in their communities? And how do these two ideas connect? \nThis workshop will provide an overview of the concept of Tactical Urbanism – in use in many cities through- out the world as a way to engage residents in reclaiming spaces for all users. Participants will then be invited to see this concept – and the resulting build-out and project demonstration – through the lens of older adults. Those in attendance will come away with a better understanding of this concept and how it will be implemented on the ground in concert with the Old 4th Ward community of Atlanta. \nThis training will feature Mike Lydon\, internationally recognized planner and expert in the field. Lydon has been featured on CNN\, The New York Times\, and NPR for his work on livable cities. DESCRIPTION:The “Georgia Hoedown” will include a full meal\, two drink tickets and great entertainment from “The After Party” band! A traditional southern dinner buffet includes barbeque chicken and pork\, macaroni and cheese\, collard greens\, hush puppies\, peach cobbler and pecan pie. The After Party will play crowd favorites including Beatles\, Journey\, Tom Petty\, Gin Blossoms and The Cure.  \nThe Georgia Railroad Freight Depot was completed in April of 1869\, and is one of the oldest buildings in downtown Atlanta. The brick building served as the main freight depot for the Georgia Railroad and was restored by the Georgia Building Authority in 1981. Large rolling barn doors and period lighting are sure to add ambiance to the event.

DESCRIPTION:Until recently\, few jurisdictions prepared their own fiscal impact analyses to assist land-use decisions. But since the economic downturn\, local governments have increasingly turned to fiscal and economic analysis as a decision support tool\, particularly with an eye toward return on investment. Many planners have only a superficial understanding of fiscal impact analysis. SUMMARY:The Newton Model: A Story of Community Collaboration and Action
DESCRIPTION:In April 2012\, Baxter International announced its plans to build a $1 billion state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Covington\, GA\, to support its plasma-based treatments. This move will create over 1\,500 new full-time jobs and have a significant impact on the regional economy. \nCommunities across the country seek to draw this type of company to create high-wage jobs and drive economic development\, but how this story unfolded is far from formulaic. \nThis training will share how a dedicated group of community leaders embarked on a process of education\, planning and collaboration that now constitutes the “Newton Model.” Many point to this process\, and the resources it has created\, as crucial to securing the Baxter deal. \nParticipants will come away with a clear understanding of this model of cooperation among local governments\, as well as ideas for how they can spur similar discussions and progress in their own communities.  \nThis one-day training will be followed up by an optional second day interactive Learning Lab on how participants can apply the principles of the “Newton Model” to their communities\, using key facts and data. DESCRIPTION:The Economic Development Division presents a Webinar on “Incentivizing Your City Centers: Regional Connections Through Mass Transit and Redevelopment\,” on Friday\, September 27\, from 1:00-2:30 EDT. \nDescription: This session will focus on the kinds of incentives and planing tools that can be used to promote both redevelopment in the traditional centers of a city — those outside downtown — and the unification of those areas through mass transit. The session will cover the use of a variety of economic development incentives\, form-based codes implementation\, and use of the Institute for Transportation Engineers “Walkable Urban Thoroughfares Manual” as a package for revitalization in El Paso\, Texas. \nAbout the Presenter: Mathew McElroy\, AICP\, is Director of the City Development Department for the City of El Paso and oversees the Planning\, Building Permits and Inspections\, and Economic Development divisions. Prior to joining the City of El Paso\, he served as the Associate Director of the Institute for Policy and Economic Development (IPED) at the University of Texas at El Paso. In his work at IPED\, Mathew oversaw research operations. His work extended from redevelopment studies and housing to econometric forecasting\, input-output based economic impact analysis\, and geographic information systems (GIS). In his final year at UTEP\, he co-led the team that won the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER) National Award for Excellence in Policy Analysis for a bi-national industry cluster study.
