SUMMARY:Planning for Aging Septic Systems
DESCRIPTION:Aging septic systems are a threat to human health\, water quality\, and the environment. Athens-Clarke County plunged in to solve the issue with funds from an EPD Grant in conjunction with the Upper Oconee Water Planning Council. \nWhere:Athens-Clarke County Planning Department Auditorium120 W. Dougherty StreetAthens\, GA 30601 \nWhen:Friday\, January 8 from 3:00 – 5:00 PM followed by an optional networking opportunity at Creature Comforts Brewery. \nAthens-Clarke County (ACC) has nineteen stream segments listed on the EPD 303(d) list for fecal coliform contamination. Using funds from a 319 Grant\, ACC developed a program to address the issue. \nThe creation of the septic inventory\, education campaign\, and the water quality monitoring program has successfully helped ACC understand the impacts of failing septic systems and to work on de-listing impaired streams. It also demonstrated the lack of septic system knowledge pushing ACC staff to continue the education efforts through the Clarke County Health Department and ACC Stormwater Program. The Septic System inventory and educational materials will be used as a template for communities throughout the state of Georgia and made available to session participants. \nFor more information and to register email marilyn.hall@athensclarkecounty.com

DESCRIPTION:The Georgia Tech Student Planning Association would like to officially invite you to be a part of World Town Planning Day 2015 on Nov 9 at 6:30pm in the College of Architecture Auditorium.  \nAs we continue the tradition of hosting compelling panel discussions on timely and relevant planning issues in Atlanta\, this year’s topic will ask “Who Owns the Streets?”  \nAs Atlanta moves away from a principally car-focused orientation for its roads and looks towards more complete streets\, how can planners and designers equitably distribute these physical spaces between different uses and users? Who should have the authority to make decisions about streets– the parties that own them\, the current users that take advantage of them\, potential future users\, or the communities through which the roads run and often play a large part in defining? Moving in this direction\, there does not seem to be an understood precedent on many of this issues\, and this has been made clear through the clashes surrounding the addition of bike lanes\, in conversations about transit priority\, and even in the debate about painting rainbow crosswalks at intersections. DESCRIPTION:YPG is hosting an educational event at Blue Heron Nature Preserve (BHNP)\, located in the North Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta\, on July 30\, 2015\, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. We have applied for CM Credits for AICP. There is limited space\, and we must cap the attendance at 25 people\, so please RSVP by no later than July 28\, 2015\, at 5:00 PM\, if you plan to attend. Email Sarah McColley with questions and to RSVP.  \nNancy Jones\, the BHNP Executive Director\, and Kevin McCauley\, the Project Director\, will give a presentation about the planning opportunities that BHNP is currently addressing and the history of the Preserve’s creation. After this presentation\, we will walk a portion of the Preserve and learn more about the Preserve and ecological systems. The presentation will also describe the continued expansion of the BHNP\, which involves local activism and multiple organizational partnerships. Currently\, BHNP is finalizing the updates to their master plan and have addressed the need to connect to adjacent parks and trails\, add programming and facilities\, and restore habitat on-site. Come learn about a side of our profession that is not typically at the forefront of planning in urban areas!

Moreover\, course participants will learn how to calculate debt/service ratios\, cash on cash rate of return\, capitalization rates\, underwriting ratios\, debt coverage ratios and similar financial tools used to identify project feasibility. Course instructors will also spend time teaching how potential investors measure return on investment (ROI) how lenders evaluate risk. The consulting firm of Looney Ricks Kiss has been hired to assist the City with establishing a vision for a timeless civic building that is fully integrated into the community. It is anticipated that the facility will host events ranging from local meetings to regional conferences to wedding receptions. Additionally\, a number of other uses might share the space.
