DESCRIPTION:Nominations are open for members of the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners (FAICP).  \nElection to the College of Fellows is one of the highest honors that the American Institute of Certified Planners\, the professional institute of the American Planning Association\, bestows upon a member. This honor recognizes the achievements of the professional as a model planner with significant contributions to planning and society. Fellowship will be granted to planners selected by a national committee from nominations received by a chapter of division of APA. \nMembers of the GA Chapter are eligible for consideration if they have been members of AICP for 15 years or more\, are members in good standing of AICP\, and have achieved excellence in professional practice\, teaching and mentoring\, research\, public or community service and leadership and made an outstanding contribution to the profession over an extended period of time. \nNominations for members of the Class of 2014 College of Fellows of AICP will be open until September 8\, 2013. Please submit your nominations by email to Gary Cornell\, FAICP at gary.cornell@comcast.net. \nA committee appointed by the President of the GA Chapter of APA will then review nominations and present a slate of selected chapter members to the Board of Directors of the GA Chapter of APA for their endorsement. If selected at the national level\, they will be inducted during the National Conference to be held in April\, 2014.

The event will be held downtown at the Booth Western Art Museum from 10:00 to 2:00. \nDavid Kirk\, FAICP\, and Harold Buckley\, AICP\, will lead the sessions. Mr. Kirk and Mr. Buckley are two of only a few professionals in Georgia who hold both JD degrees and AICP certification.  \nThe cost to attendees is $20 per person. DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Thursday\, March 28\, for the Young Planners Group Spring Event. This event will include a guided tour of Ponce City Market and a presentation of the proposed infrastructure improvements for the Ponce Corridor. The tour will go over the development plan\, planning considerations\, integration of the development into the City\, and challenges that have been tackled throughout the process. Following the event\, we will have networking and a late happy hour at Bookhouse Pub. (Close-toed shoes and waivers are required.) Parking and the entrance to the building are located at the southwest corner of the building\, near the intersection of North Avenue and Glen Iris. DESCRIPTION:Approximately 150 experts from around Georgia have been invited to be a part of this day-long event. The purpose is to bring together a variety of disciplines\, and leading experts within those disciplines\, to address how we\, as a group\, can successfully not only manage our flood risk\, here within the State\, but also how we can manage our valuable floodplain resources\, as well! \nSelected experts will convene to explore the program and policy implications of “Managing Flood Risks and Floodplain Resources”\, including how the risk management concept and its attendant techniques could be applied to minimize flood risk to humans\, the built environment\, infrastructure\, society\, and the natural functions and resources of floodplains. It is critical that we protect the beneficial functions of the natural floodplain to reduce flood damages across Georgia. DESCRIPTION:This year\, Georgia Tech’s Architecture\, City and Regional Planning\, and Public Policy schools will once again cooperate on a Career Fair to help you recruit the best professionals. This free event is intended to broaden applicant pools and enhance the fit between graduating M.Arch\, MCRP\, and MSPP students and employers\, but it also serves to open doors for intern placements and later employment. The fair will take place on Friday\, March 15\, 2013.  \nWith hundreds of students studying Architecture\, City and Regional Planning\, and Public Policy\, there is a large pool of students seeking either permanent positions or summer internships. MCRP students’ interests cover a wide range of planning specializations including land use\, land development and housing\, economic development\, transportation planning\, environmental planning\, geographic information systems\, and urban design. Some students are pursuing dual degrees jointly with Architecture\, Civil Engineering\, Law\, or Public Policy. M.Arch students have the opportunity to focus in concentrated areas of architecture such as Architecture/Engineering/Construction Integration\, Digital Design and Fabrication\, High Performance Building and Health and Design to name a few. The wide variety of focused areas available to M.Arch students make them well prepared to lead the field with their uniquely competitive skill sets. In addition\, he is Secretary of the Whitfield County Historic Preservation Commission and of the non-profit Save Dalton’s Battlefields\, and sits on the Administrative Committee of the Dalton Historic Preservation Commission and the board of Chieftains Museum. Kevin will talk about a grassroots effort in Whitfield County to purchase and preserve important Civil War battlefield sites. \nDuring lunch\, Alvin Jackson and/or Ron Sitterding will discuss the history and importance of Old Main School (circa 1934)\, and the recent renovation so that nonprofit agencies could use the structure for administrative offices and programs that serve disadvantaged youth in the community. \nDownload registration form

SUMMARY:8th Forum of the World Alliance of Cities Against Poverty
DESCRIPTION:In February 2013\, the City of Dublin will proudly host the 8th Forum of the World Alliance of Cities Against Poverty (WACAP)\, a worldwide network of some 900 cities established by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to work together to address urban challenges and crises in a collective and collaborative manner. \n The Dublin Forum and Expo will take place over two days\, 20-21 February 2013 in the RDS\, Dublin. The Forum will explore the role of technology in alleviating the symptoms of poverty in cities of the global South and North and specifically in Making Cities Smart\, Safe and Sustainable. The Forum and Expo aims to attract up to 1\,000 international delegates including city Mayors\, experts at the forefront of the technology sector\, development NGOs\, urban planners and anti-poverty groups and academics. Confirmed keynote addresses will be given by Michelle Bachelet (Executive Director\, UN Women)\, Mary Robinson (Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice) and Tom Arnold (Concern Worldwide).  \n Global Stories will form an integral part of the Forum. A Global Story constitutes any action that has been undertaken on a local\, regional or global scale that illustrate how an organisation has used technology in the urban setting to tackle issues of poverty\, safety and sustainability. These Global Stories (case studies) will allow planners\, amongst others\, to showcase products\, programmes\, projects\, policies and partnerships which demonstrate the role of technology in responding to the urban challenges of poverty\, safety and sustainability. Once submitted\, the Global Story will be published on the Forum’s website. The Forum will also feature an Expo\, which will provide space for businesses\, regions\, universities\, NGOs and others to display and explain their products and projects. A further key feature of the event is the matching of real challenges to real solutions. SUMMARY:Resilient Communities
DESCRIPTION:This Practicum provides sea level rise science\, research on shoreline movement\, and the implications for the Georgia coast. \nThis workshop is facilitated by Jason M. Evans\, PhD Environmental Sustainability Analyst\, Environmental Policy Program for the Carl Vinson Institute of Government in Athens\, GA. Dr. Evans helps state and local leaders examine and develop comprehensive environmental management policies and practices. Trained as an interdisciplinary ecologist\, he is an expert in developing policy recommendations that take into account the wide range of possible environmental implications. \nThe workshop is also facilitated by Clark R. Alexander\, Ph.D.\, Professor at Skidaway Institute of Oceanography in Savannah\, Georgia. His research and projects include sedimentary processes on continental margins\, coastal and barrier island geology\, rates and processes of shoreline change\, quaternary sea level history\, and barrier island formation and stratigraphy. The workshop will provide the Coastal Resources Division’s regulatory and research role and present information about the Coastal Hazards Portal\, armored shoreline database\, and how coastal planners can consider this type of information in planning. \nThe Practicum will include population/land use growth models for coastal counties\, and provide a thorough review of the various legal obligations and policy challenges that local governments face when they start to grapple with sea level rise issues. The workshop will present results of Governor’s South Atlantic Alliance coastal vulnerability assessment project pertaining to sea level rise hazards\, and other modeling results\, such as new Sea Level Affecting Marshes Model (SLAMM) modeling for GA.
