DESCRIPTION:The School of City and Regional Planning at Georgia Tech is pleased to host Dan Immergluck for a lecture marking his promotion to professor: What’s Next? Prognosis and Prospects for Housing and Urban Form After the Crisis \nMORE INFORMATION \nParking available in Peters Parking Deck \nAICP Certification Maintenance credits applied for. \nThere are no shortages of forecasts for how housing markets and urban development might change over the next decades as a result of the foreclosure crisis\, financial regulatory reform\, the restructuring of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac\, and other seismic shifts in financial markets and public policy. For many\, the volume and pace of change in recent years in this arena have been overwhelming. What do we know – or think we know — about the future of housing markets\, housing finance\, and homeownership? What about prospects for rental housing? What will various changes in housing finance and public policy mean for our urban and suburban futures? Will the new financial structures and associated policy thrusts align with an agenda of sustainable urban development and planning or work against it? What about goals of social equity and efforts to provide decent housing for lower-income households? What policy choices lay ahead that will be pivotal in answering some of these questions? \nDan Immergluck conducts research on housing and real estate markets\, mortgage finance and foreclosures\, community reinvestment and fair lending\, neighborhood change\, and related public policy. He teaches courses in real estate finance\, housing policy and research methods. Dr. Immergluck has authored three books\, more than 30 articles in scholarly journals and scores of applied research and policy reports. He manages applied research projects at local and national levels. He has testified before Congress and state and local legislative bodies. His work has been cited in a wide variety of government and policy reports. Professor Immergluck has been frequently quoted and cited in the media\, including in the New York Times\, the Wall Street Journal\, the Washington Post\, Time Magazine\, USA Today and a wide variety of regional and local newspapers. His most recent book\, Foreclosed: High-Risk Lending\, Deregulation\, and the Undermining of America’s Mortgage Market\, was reissued in paperback in 2011 by Cornell University Press.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Georgia Conservancy’s Growth Management Program and Georgia Tech professors Richard Dagenhart\, Doug Allen\, and David Green for a six-class course focusing on the history\, principles\, and current practices of designing better cities and a better Atlanta. DESCRIPTION:“We’ll get through it\, but the era of cheap and abundant water is over.” -Bill Holman \nOnce considered an unlimited resource in the Carolinas and Georgia\, protecting both the quality and availability of water is becoming an ever increasing challenge. To offer a forum for discussion of these critical issues the first Tri-state Watershed Symposium was held in 2003 as part of the South Carolina Environmental Conference in Myrtle Beach\, SC. \nThe event has grown in size and scope. It is now known as Confluence the Interstate Water Issues Conference\, and for the past several years has rotated between North Carolina\, South Carolina\, and Georgia. \nThe primary goals of this conference are to foster communication and resource sharing among the three states and discuss emerging issues and key regulatory programs. Invited guests have included representatives from state and federal regulatory agencies\, utilities\, academia and industry. Past conferences have focused on water rights\, water regulations\, sustainable planning\, and climate change. \nThis year’s conference is in Greenville\, SC from September 21 – 23. DESCRIPTION:The Georgia Department of Public Health’s Office of Injury Prevention\, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety\, and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are pleased to offer the third annual workshop on Designing and Operating Streets and Roads to Accommodate Older Drivers and Pedestrians. \nThe target audiences for this workshop are Georgia’s roadway designers\, traffic engineers\, and highway safety specialists. The workshop will be held at Atlanta’s Loudermilk Center from 8a.m.-4p.m. on Friday\, September 9th\, 2011. (Registration and continental breakfast will begin at 7:45a.m.\, and vouchers for the parking deck will be provided to all attendees.) This training is being offered in accordance with recommendations from the Governor’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan\, which has designated older driver safety as one of its key emphasis areas. Aging impacts a variety of skills and abilities necessary for safe driving. Many highway design and traffic control elements can be improved to better meet the aging population’s needs. Furthermore\, all road users can benefit from safety improvements that are designed with older drivers in mind. \nDesigning and Operating Streets and Roads to Accommodate Older Drivers and Pedestrians will familiarize participants with the physical\, perceptual\, and cognitive impairments that can impact the ability to safely navigate a vehicle\, and illustrate key strategies for improving safety and mobility for older roadway users. The workshop will highlight the relationship between the FHWA Highway Design Handbook for Older Drivers and Pedestrians and existing standards and guidelines in the areas of highway geometry\, operations\, and traffic control devices. \nThis workshop was designed for safety professionals who plan\, design\, review\, recommend\, and/or approve the use of enhanced design and traffic operational criteria for transportation projects. Join the Georgia Conservancy’s Growth Management Program and Georgia Tech professors Richard Dagenhart\, David Green\, and Doug Allen to learn about sustainable community design and how different professions can collaborate to improve our cities\, including Macon. \nThemes include platting and subdivision\, street design and transportation\, zoning\, and urban design. The course contextualizes growth and development issues in the history of urban design while paying special attention to the specific challenges facing Macon. \nThe course will be presented in an informal PowerPoint lecture with questions welcomed at any time.  Handouts and breakfast will be included\, as well as a midway break with light snacks available. \nWho should attend? \nAnyone interested in planning \, designing and building a better Macon – neighborhood residents\, government officials\, engineers\, non-profit advocacy and advisory groups\, architects\, historic preservationists\, landscape architects\, planners\, attorneys\, financial professionals\, developers\, and real estate brokers.  \nRegister Now! Through its focus on clean air and water\, land conservation\, coastal protection\, growth management and education\, the Georgia Conservancy works to develop solutions to protect Georgia’s environment and promote the stewardship of the state’s vital natural resources. \nInstructors: \n\nRichard Dagenhart is associate professor of architecture and urban design at Georgia Tech\, where he teaches urban design seminars and studios in both the Architecture and City and Regional Planning Schools and heads the Master of Urban Design program.  He is an architect and city planner with more than 35 years’ experience in teaching\, practicing and learning about urban design in the United States and across the globe.\n David Green is an architect and professor of practice in the College of Architecture at Georgia Tech\, teaching urban design and architecture studios while also being involved in an emerging national and international urban design practice as associate principal with Perkins+Will in Atlanta. He has been involved in all stages of urban design practice from urban design visions\, neighborhood participation\, zoning and subdivision processes and building design.\n Doug Allen is professor and associate dean of the College of Architecture at Georgia Tech where he teaches the most popular course in the college\, The History of Urban Form. DESCRIPTION:Dear Bicycle & Pedestrian safety stakeholders\, I am pleased to announce a series of upcoming meetings to discuss the statewide Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety Action Plan. That document was initially developed and finalized in 2008 and is due for updates and revisions.  \nThis meeting will address the current status of the plan\, necessary updates to data and recommendations\, and an ongoing schedule; attached is a copy of the meeting agenda. We anticipate holding several subsequent meetings this year to continue the necessary updates to the current plan. Please let us know if you or someone else from your organization will be able to attend this meeting or have an interest in future meetings. \nThe Bicycle & Pedestrian Task Team will be meeting at the Georgia DOT office at One Georgia Center (Midtown\, Atlanta) on Friday\, July 29th from 10:00am-12:00pm. The meeting will be held in Room 403\, on the 4th floor. Each attendee will need to check in at the front desk\, so please plan on arriving a few minutes early. DESCRIPTION:Shaw Afb And The Sumter Community: A Coordinated Comprehensive Planning Approach \nSCAPA’s mid-year conference will give attendees an opportunity to visit a vital Department of Defense asset in the State for a chance to learn more about its contributions to overall planning efforts. Many practicing community\, city and regional\, planners lack a full understanding about military installation planning and the staff charged with directing planning activities of the military installations located in South Carolina. Trained planners are a key resource for the survival and future economic impact that a military base brings to a local community. The day –long session focuses on the Military Planning Community and the contributions made to the State of South Carolina by these facilities.
