DESCRIPTION:“We’ll get through it\, but the era of cheap and abundant water is over.” -Bill Holman \nOnce considered an unlimited resource in the Carolinas and Georgia\, protecting both the quality and availability of water is becoming an ever increasing challenge. To offer a forum for discussion of these critical issues the first Tri-state Watershed Symposium was held in 2003 as part of the South Carolina Environmental Conference in Myrtle Beach\, SC. \nThe event has grown in size and scope. It is now known as Confluence the Interstate Water Issues Conference\, and for the past several years has rotated between North Carolina\, South Carolina\, and Georgia. \nThe primary goals of this conference are to foster communication and resource sharing among the three states and discuss emerging issues and key regulatory programs. Invited guests have included representatives from state and federal regulatory agencies\, utilities\, academia and industry. Past conferences have focused on water rights\, water regulations\, sustainable planning\, and climate change. \nThis year’s conference is in Greenville\, SC from September 21 – 23. SUMMARY:Designing and Operating Streets and Roads
DESCRIPTION:The Georgia Department of Public Health’s Office of Injury Prevention\, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety\, and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are pleased to offer the third annual workshop on Designing and Operating Streets and Roads to Accommodate Older Drivers and Pedestrians. \nThe target audiences for this workshop are Georgia’s roadway designers\, traffic engineers\, and highway safety specialists. The workshop will be held at Atlanta’s Loudermilk Center from 8a.m.-4p.m. on Friday\, September 9th\, 2011. (Registration and continental breakfast will begin at 7:45a.m.\, and vouchers for the parking deck will be provided to all attendees.) This training is being offered in accordance with recommendations from the Governor’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan\, which has designated older driver safety as one of its key emphasis areas. Aging impacts a variety of skills and abilities necessary for safe driving. Many highway design and traffic control elements can be improved to better meet the aging population’s needs. Furthermore\, all road users can benefit from safety improvements that are designed with older drivers in mind. \nDesigning and Operating Streets and Roads to Accommodate Older Drivers and Pedestrians will familiarize participants with the physical\, perceptual\, and cognitive impairments that can impact the ability to safely navigate a vehicle\, and illustrate key strategies for improving safety and mobility for older roadway users. The workshop will highlight the relationship between the FHWA Highway Design Handbook for Older Drivers and Pedestrians and existing standards and guidelines in the areas of highway geometry\, operations\, and traffic control devices. \nThis workshop was designed for safety professionals who plan\, design\, review\, recommend\, and/or approve the use of enhanced design and traffic operational criteria for transportation projects. During this meeting\, we will be going in to greater detail about: \n\nWhat a Planner’s Network Chapter can be expected to do within a community\nSome of the opportunities for action within Atlanta (specifically in regards to the proposed construction of a new Atlanta Falcon’s stadium)\, and\nThe general structure of the type of Chapter that we would like to set up.\n\nIf some of you are still a little unsure about the benefits of membership within a Planner’s Network Chapter\, below is a copy of the excellent e-mail that Moki Macias sent last month. \n“Why a Planner’s Network chapter for Atlanta? \nA group of graduate students in the Georgia Tech School of City Planning have been engaged in social justice planning issuesfor the last several years — but we realize that to become a powerful voice for progressive planning in Atlanta we must join together with a much broader network of residents\, practitioners\, and advocates who are engaged in this work\, as well as connect to others who are pushing forward these critical conversations across the country. \nWe know that Atlanta\, as many of you have in fact taught us\, has a long history of struggle–with both major injustices and hard-fought victories–around issues of equitable development\, affordable housing\, quality public services and infrastructure\, and public participation in the decisions that shape our neighborhoods\, public spaces\, and city as a whole. There are many informal and formal networks that have carried this work forward. DESCRIPTION:This webinar will parse the fundamental components of real estate finance so that participants will better understand the financial pro formas that real estate developers present to planners and economic developers when seeking public approvals for projects.  Three finance exercises involving realistic real estate developments will then be conducted.
