SUMMARY:Cycling for Sustainable Cities
DESCRIPTION:Cycling is a sustainable means of urban travel. It has the potential to serve many short- and medium-distance trips—for commuting to and from work and school\, shopping\, and visiting friends—as well as providing recreation and exercise. Cycling promotes physical\, social\, and mental health\, helps reduce car use\, enhances mobility and independence\, and is economical for both public and personal budgets. \nThis presentation explores how to make city cycling safe\, practical\, and convenient for a broad spectrum of ages\, genders\, and abilities. Buehler and Pucher discuss the latest cycling trends and policies around the world and consider specific aspects of cycling. Based on data from 2019-2020 from cities around the world\, they also review the impacts of COVID-19 on cycling levels and government policies to promote cycling. Taken together\, the presentation demonstrates that the successful promotion of cycling depends on a coordinated package of mutually supportive infrastructure\, programs\, and policies. Cycling should be made feasible for as many people as possible and not limited to especially fit\, daring\, well-trained cyclists riding expensive bicycles. The talk is based on their recent co-edited book Cycling for Sustainable Cities (MIT Press). \nSpeakers\nRalph Buehler is Professor and Chair of Urban Affairs and Planning in the School of Public and International Affairs at Virginia Tech’s Research Center in Arlington\, Virginia. Most of his research has an international comparative perspective\, contrasting transport and land-use policies\, transport systems\, and travel behavior in Western Europe and North America. \nJohn Pucher\, Ph.D. is professor emeritus in the School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University\, in New Jersey\, where he taught from 1978 to 2014. Over more than four decades\, Pucher has conducted research on urban transport in North America\, Europe\, Australia\, and Asia. \nAll state APA chapters in the Southeast are welcome to participate in this webinar that VA APA and NC APA are organizing and co-sponsoring.

SUMMARY:Georgia Smart Communities Challenge Final Presentation: Civic Data Science for Equitable Development
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, the Partnership for Inclusive Innovation supports communities across Georgia through the Georgia Smart Communities Challenge community research assistance program. Georgia Smart empowers communities to envision and plan for a smarter future by providing opportunities to work with Georgia Tech and university researchers to advance local initiatives. In 2020\, the City of Savannah was one of four communities supported by Georgia Smart for their “Civic Data Science for Equitable Development” project. \nSavannah estimates that every abandoned\, blighted property in this historic city bleeds approximately $1\,300 of public funds annually. These funds are largely unrecoverable costs incurred for addressing overgrown grass\, litter\, illegal dumping\, securing open structures and demolishing properties\, and lost property tax revenue. In 2020\, the city of Sandy Springs was one of four communities supported by Georgia Smart for their “Streamlining Suburban Transit” project\, which sought to pilot Transit Signal Priority with an Application Program Interface. \nOver the last year\, the Sandy Springs project and research team have worked together to plan\, install\, pilot\, and evaluate the innovative TSP system using an API\, including its effects on the corresponding bus system. The project sought to improve mobility\, maximize the transit system and improve walkability and sense of place in the Perimeter and Roswell Road areas without the need for extensive infrastructure investments such as bus-only lanes or expensive hardware and radios. Specifically\, Sandy Springs will test TSP on MARTA bus route 5 which connects the Dunwoody and Lindbergh MARTA rail stations and operates with 15-minute headway. \nPlease join the Partnership and the Georgia Planning Association for this virtual event of the City of Sandy Springs’ final project presentation.
