SUMMARY:8th Forum of the World Alliance of Cities Against Poverty
DESCRIPTION:In February 2013\, the City of Dublin will proudly host the 8th Forum of the World Alliance of Cities Against Poverty (WACAP)\, a worldwide network of some 900 cities established by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to work together to address urban challenges and crises in a collective and collaborative manner. \n The Dublin Forum and Expo will take place over two days\, 20-21 February 2013 in the RDS\, Dublin. The Forum will explore the role of technology in alleviating the symptoms of poverty in cities of the global South and North and specifically in Making Cities Smart\, Safe and Sustainable. The Forum and Expo aims to attract up to 1\,000 international delegates including city Mayors\, experts at the forefront of the technology sector\, development NGOs\, urban planners and anti-poverty groups and academics. Confirmed keynote addresses will be given by Michelle Bachelet (Executive Director\, UN Women)\, Mary Robinson (Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice) and Tom Arnold (Concern Worldwide).  \n Global Stories will form an integral part of the Forum. A Global Story constitutes any action that has been undertaken on a local\, regional or global scale that illustrate how an organisation has used technology in the urban setting to tackle issues of poverty\, safety and sustainability. These Global Stories (case studies) will allow planners\, amongst others\, to showcase products\, programmes\, projects\, policies and partnerships which demonstrate the role of technology in responding to the urban challenges of poverty\, safety and sustainability. Once submitted\, the Global Story will be published on the Forum’s website. The Forum will also feature an Expo\, which will provide space for businesses\, regions\, universities\, NGOs and others to display and explain their products and projects. A further key feature of the event is the matching of real challenges to real solutions. SUMMARY:Resilient Communities
DESCRIPTION:This Practicum provides sea level rise science\, research on shoreline movement\, and the implications for the Georgia coast. \nThis workshop is facilitated by Jason M. Evans\, PhD Environmental Sustainability Analyst\, Environmental Policy Program for the Carl Vinson Institute of Government in Athens\, GA. Dr. Evans helps state and local leaders examine and develop comprehensive environmental management policies and practices. Trained as an interdisciplinary ecologist\, he is an expert in developing policy recommendations that take into account the wide range of possible environmental implications. \nThe workshop is also facilitated by Clark R. Alexander\, Ph.D.\, Professor at Skidaway Institute of Oceanography in Savannah\, Georgia. His research and projects include sedimentary processes on continental margins\, coastal and barrier island geology\, rates and processes of shoreline change\, quaternary sea level history\, and barrier island formation and stratigraphy. The workshop will provide the Coastal Resources Division’s regulatory and research role and present information about the Coastal Hazards Portal\, armored shoreline database\, and how coastal planners can consider this type of information in planning. \nThe Practicum will include population/land use growth models for coastal counties\, and provide a thorough review of the various legal obligations and policy challenges that local governments face when they start to grapple with sea level rise issues. The workshop will present results of Governor’s South Atlantic Alliance coastal vulnerability assessment project pertaining to sea level rise hazards\, and other modeling results\, such as new Sea Level Affecting Marshes Model (SLAMM) modeling for GA.

SUMMARY:Center for Community Progress Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The national Center for Community Progress will conduct a workshop on mitigating the effects of foreclosure for AHAND and G-STAND next Thursday\, on January 24th. The Center for Community Progress is the nation’s preeminent organization addressing issues of vacant properties – both the prevention of abandonment and adaptive reuse. With staff in Flint Michigan\, Washington D.C.\, and New Orleans who provide advocacy\, technical assistance and organizational development services to governments and advocates throughout the nation\, Community Progress helps neighborhoods\, cities\, counties and states forge and implement effective strategies to prevent and reuse vacant properties. Frank Alexander\, law professor at Emory University\, was one of the founding members. \nThis workshop is open to anyone concerned about mitigating the devastating effects of foreclosures\, but is especially geared toward nonprofit housing developers (including CDCs) and governmental housing and community development agencies.  We think this workshop provides a unique opportunity for low-cost\, local training usually only available nationally.  \nThis workshop is also one of three scheduled for the first quarter of this year. Anyone interested can register online at www.ahand.org for one seminar or all three. By registering for all three now\, people can save: $40 for individual workshop registration or $75 for all three.

SUMMARY:Safe Routes to School
DESCRIPTION:Safe Routes to School is about much more than simply providing sidewalks. The factors which influence whether or not a student walks or rides a bike to school are complex. The top two barriers to walking and bicycling to school\, as reported by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention1\, are long distances (62%) and traffic danger (30%). Both of these factors are directly related to where the school is located. In recognition of the importance of school siting\, Congress directed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to develop voluntary School Siting Guidelines which encourage a holistic approach to school siting issues\, particularly as related to children’s health. This workshop proposes to look not only at Safe Routes to School\, but to take a step back and look at the school itself. DESCRIPTION:Join Associate Professor of City and Regional Planning Brian Stone as he discusses his new book\, The City and the Coming Climate: Climate Change in the Places We Live.  This book is the first to explore the dramatic amplification of global warming underway in cities and the range of actions that individuals and governments can undertake to slow the pace of warming. A core thesis of the book is that the principal strategy currently advocated to mitigate climate change–the reduction of greenhouse gases–will not prove sufficient to measurably slow the rapid pace of warming in urban environments. Brian Stone explains the science of climate change in terms accessible to the nonscientist and with compelling anecdotes drawn from history and current events. DESCRIPTION:This Tri-State (GA\, SC\, NC) conference is held annually to encourage dialogue about watershed issues in the Southeast. AICP credit (4.0 credits) for this conference is now available. \n\n\nA Pre-Conference Technical Workshop on communicating effectively with emerging media.
