SUMMARY:Safe Routes to School
DESCRIPTION:Safe Routes to School is about much more than simply providing sidewalks. The factors which influence whether or not a student walks or rides a bike to school are complex. The top two barriers to walking and bicycling to school\, as reported by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention1\, are long distances (62%) and traffic danger (30%). Both of these factors are directly related to where the school is located. In recognition of the importance of school siting\, Congress directed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to develop voluntary School Siting Guidelines which encourage a holistic approach to school siting issues\, particularly as related to children’s health. This workshop proposes to look not only at Safe Routes to School\, but to take a step back and look at the school itself. As long as the predominant development pattern for new schools continues to be mega‐campuses on greenfield sites miles away from the populations they serve\, Safe Routes to School will continue to be elusive to much of Georgia’s student population. \n1 U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. DESCRIPTION:Join Associate Professor of City and Regional Planning Brian Stone as he discusses his new book\, The City and the Coming Climate: Climate Change in the Places We Live.  This book is the first to explore the dramatic amplification of global warming underway in cities and the range of actions that individuals and governments can undertake to slow the pace of warming. A core thesis of the book is that the principal strategy currently advocated to mitigate climate change–the reduction of greenhouse gases–will not prove sufficient to measurably slow the rapid pace of warming in urban environments. Brian Stone explains the science of climate change in terms accessible to the nonscientist and with compelling anecdotes drawn from history and current events. The initial goal of the Georgia Green Economy Summit was to raise awareness while fostering objective dialog in regards to GA understanding the implications of the emerging Green Economy. DESCRIPTION:Designing Streets for Pedestrian Safety is a highly visual\, hands-on workshop hosted by PEDS and customized for Metro Atlanta. Topics include street connectivity\, access management\, road diets\, complete streets\, intersection design\, access to transit\, and the nuts and bolts of creating safe crossings.
