DESCRIPTION:Designing Streets for Pedestrian Safety is a highly visual\, hands-on workshop hosted by PEDS and customized for Metro Atlanta. Topics include street connectivity\, access management\, road diets\, complete streets\, intersection design\, access to transit\, and the nuts and bolts of creating safe crossings. SUMMARY:Gulch Tour / MMPT Presentation (CM | TBD)
DESCRIPTION:Click for larger version. \nAll planners are invited to join the GPA Young Planners Group for a tour of the Gulch area in downtown Atlanta and a presentation on the multi-modal passenger terminal (MMPT). The proposed MMPT will serve as a hub for existing and future transit systems and will also serve as a catalyst for development in the area. The tour will take place on the evening of Thursday\, May 24th\, beginning at 5:30. The event speakers include: \n\nJohn Skach\, Urban Collage\nDavid Scott\, IntegralGude\nDerrick Cameron\, Georgia DOT\nAngie Laurie\, Central Atlanta Progress\n\nThe tour will begin at the southeast corner of the intersection of Central Avenue and Alabama Street at the lower pedestrian level. This is near Underground Atlanta\, the old Georgia Railroad Freight Depot\, and the Old World of Coke museum. We’ll end the tour at the Glenn Hotel and head upstairs to the SkyLounge to continue the discussion of the MMPT. The SkyLounge will give us a great aerial view of the Gulch\, as well as much of the rest of downtown. See the attached map for the start and end locations of the tour. The event schedule is as follows: \n5:30 pm – Meet at the intersection of Central Avenue and Alabama Street near Underground Atlanta \n5:35 pm – Start the Gulch Tour (John Skach and Dennis Madsen) \n6:30 pm – End of the tour at the Glenn Hotel and gather in the SkyLounge \n6:35 pm – Discussion and Q & A on the MMPT planning process (Angie Laurie\, Derrick Cameron\, and Dennis Madsen) \n7:30 pm – Networking \nThe tour location is easily accessible from the MARTA Five Points Station. A number of parking decks and lots are available nearby\, including a deck adjacent to the tour starting point at 90 Central Avenue. This event will take place rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather\, we’ll meet upstairs at the SkyLounge at the Glenn Hotel (110 Marietta Street Northwest\, Atlanta\, GA) for the entire event.  \nAICP CM credits are being pursued for this event.

DESCRIPTION:GCHP\, is a new web-based interactive tool created to provide a better understanding of coastal resources\, coastal hazards and the effects of rapid population growth and development. This online tool can be utilized in many ways; such as\, identifying vulnerability to coastal hazards and identifying connections between hazards and natural resources. It involves creative thinking as well as the willingness and ability to interact openly and sensitively to the public’s preferred forms of communication and participation. Public involvement is about reaching out to and involving the public in transportation decisionmaking. The public should have a role in every phase of decisionmaking\, including the design of the participation plan itself. Successful public involvement addresses the public’s procedural\, psychological\, and substantive needs while gathering useful information. Space is limited so register soon. \nDowell Myers is a demographer and urban planner who creates narratives to promote public understanding about pressing issues that affect our common future. In his February 22 talk at the Atlanta Fed he will use the most recent demographic data to outline the new facts and debunk some of the old rhetoric that shaped policy debates on immigration. He will spotlight changes before and after the Great Recession\, illuminating how key immigration myths are now outdated. Fact-based trends are revealed using an animated presentation to reinterpret the benefits and costs of immigration in light of the aging baby boomer tsunami.  \nAbout Dowell Myers:Dowell Myers is a professor in the University of Southern California School of Policy\, Planning\, and Development and director of the Population Dynamics Research Group. Myers holds a Ph.D. in urban and regional planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Well-known as a specialist in demographic trends and their relation to all areas of policy and planning\, Myers has a particular expertise in projecting the future and conveying knowledge useful for public decision making. Myers has testified before the U.S. Congress at Ellis Island and before the California Legislature. His recent research has focused on immigration and housing\, including the Journal of the American Planning Association 2008 award article “Aging Baby Boomers and the Generational Housing Bubble\,” and the 2007 book Immigrants and Boomers: Forging a New Social Contract for the Future of America.

The revenue generated by this tax will be used to fund a list of transportation projects\, ranging from transit\, roads\, safety\, pedestrian and bike improvements\, and technology updates. \nCENTS & SENSIBILITY: Atlanta’s Transportation Vision is a panel discussion on the impact that next year’s 1-cent sales tax transportation referendum will have on the region’s economy\, environment and equity.
