DESCRIPTION:An official “organizing meeting” will be held on Thursday\, June 16th at 6:30 P.M. at the Central Library of the Atlanta-Fulton County Library System in the 2nd Floor Meeting Room. During this meeting\, we will be going in to greater detail about: \n\nWhat a Planner’s Network Chapter can be expected to do within a community\nSome of the opportunities for action within Atlanta (specifically in regards to the proposed construction of a new Atlanta Falcon’s stadium)\, and\nThe general structure of the type of Chapter that we would like to set up.\n\nIf some of you are still a little unsure about the benefits of membership within a Planner’s Network Chapter\, below is a copy of the excellent e-mail that Moki Macias sent last month. \n“Why a Planner’s Network chapter for Atlanta? \nA group of graduate students in the Georgia Tech School of City Planning have been engaged in social justice planning issuesfor the last several years — but we realize that to become a powerful voice for progressive planning in Atlanta we must join together with a much broader network of residents\, practitioners\, and advocates who are engaged in this work\, as well as connect to others who are pushing forward these critical conversations across the country. \nWe know that Atlanta\, as many of you have in fact taught us\, has a long history of struggle–with both major injustices and hard-fought victories–around issues of equitable development\, affordable housing\, quality public services and infrastructure\, and public participation in the decisions that shape our neighborhoods\, public spaces\, and city as a whole. There are many informal and formal networks that have carried this work forward. The Planner’s Network is another opportunity to knit together a wide range of people — neighborhood leaders\, Grady nurses\, city planners\, MARTA riders\, students\, housing advocates — that can share information\, collaborate on activities\, and frame issues through a progressive planning lens. \nThere are numerous issues right now that could benefit from the energies of such a network\, such as the proposed new Falcons Stadium\, which is going forward with remarkably little transparency or public engagement (particularly shocking after the experiences of Peoplestown and Lightening residents with the last two stadiums that were built in Atlanta!). SUMMARY:Real Estate Finance from Simple to Complex (CM Approved)
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will parse the fundamental components of real estate finance so that participants will better understand the financial pro formas that real estate developers present to planners and economic developers when seeking public approvals for projects.  Three finance exercises involving realistic real estate developments will then be conducted.  The first will demonstrate a simple project involving equity and debt but that does not involve public participation.  The second will be a project that requires a public-private partnership and the consequent effects on the finances of both parties. DESCRIPTION:Denver planner and this year’s Serenbe Institute Visiting Fellow\, Jeff Winston\, will present a lecture\, “Rethinking Planning:  Is There a Better Way\,” at 4:00 PM Saturday\, May 7 at the Serenbe Institute Studio.  It will be immediately followed by a reception at Brigitte and Shelton Stanfill’s house.  There is no charge and everyone is invited. \nIn more than 25 years of professional practice\, Winston Associates has completed more than 35 comprehensive plans—for towns\, cities and regions.  The time is right to take a fresh look at the current state of planning—how well it really works\, how it’s perceived by the general public\, and how can it be made more transparent\, understandable\, less expensive and actually used in day to day decision-making by communities. The question posed is: does this require modest adjustments to what we do today\, or do we need to reexamine our approach from top to bottom?

DESCRIPTION:The College of Architecture presents George Hargreaves in the 2011 Douglas C. Allen Lecture. AIA credit will be available. \nGeorge Hargreaves is the Design Director of Hargreaves Associates\, a professional consulting firm comprised of landscape architects and planners with offices in San Francisco\, California\, Cambridge\, Massachusetts\, New York City\, and London. Under his design direction\, Hargreaves Associates has received 34 national awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA)\, six from the American Institute of Architects (AIA)\, five from the Waterfront Center\, and three from Progressive Architecture. His work\, and the work of Hargreaves Associates\, have been and continue to be published and exhibited nationally and internationally. Mr. Hargreaves was an artist in residence at the American Academy of Rome in 2009. He taught at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University for 20 years\, tenured there for 12 years\, and served as the chairman of the Department of Landscape Architecture from1996 to 2003. He is the co-editor and author of “Large Parks\,” a book that explores large urban parks in depth as complex cultural spaces\, where key issues of landscape discourse\, ecological challenges\, social history\, urban relations\, and place-making. \nThe annual Douglas C. SUMMARY:YPG: Historic Fourth Ward Park Tour/Beltline Update
DESCRIPTION:All GPA planners are invited to our next GPA/YPG event on Wednesday\, March 30th at the Historic Fourth Ward Park in Atlanta.  The Historic Fourth Ward Park is a 35-acre greenspace located at 680 Dallas Street\, roughly between North Avenue and Freedom Parkway\, near City Hall East and the Masquerade. It is the first new park built as a part of the Atlanta BeltLine.  This event is a little more interactive than our previous events since we’ll be on site at the park and able to see the results of recent planning efforts in Atlanta. \nThe Agenda: \n\n6:00 – Meet on the north end of the park above the fountain.\n6:15 – Kevin Burke begins our guided tour of the park.  Upon completion\, Ryan Gravel will give us an update on the BeltLine.\nAfter the speakers have concluded\, we’ll head over to Bookhouse Pub (about 2 blocks away on Ponce) to grab a drink with our fellow planners. \n\nWe are pursuing AICP CM credits for this event and have two very knowledgeable speakers lined up: \n\nKevin Burke\, senior landscape architect at Atlanta Beltline Inc.\, will be taking us on a tour of the park and explaining its unique features. Kevin has more than 29 years of professional experience on a range of institutional\, roadway\, college and university\, and park projects.  Prior to joining ABI\, Kevin worked for a number of years on the “Big Dig” in Boston.\nRyan Gravel\, whose joint master’s thesis in Architecture and City Planning from Georgia Tech in 1999 was the original vision for the Atlanta BeltLine\, will be giving us an update on BeltLine planning as well as implementation.  Eight years of his subsequent work as a volunteer and later in the nonprofit and government sectors was critical to the BeltLine’s success\, which is now a $2+ billion public-private initiative in the early stages of implementation. DESCRIPTION:The Georgia Water Planning Workshop is a first collaboration between the Georgia Association of Water Professionals and the Georgia Chapter of the American Planning Association.  The Workshop will cover a range of topics and is divided into two parts. The fist part of the Workshop includes an historical overview of water in Georgia\, specifically focused on how water has facilitated growth and development throughout the State over time. A summary overview of the how water\, wastewater\, and stormwater infrastructure is built\, operated and maintained will then be presented for purposes of putting into context\, the issues and variables that affect water/wastewater/stormwater managers.  The first part will be wrapped up with a presentation of the water situation facing Georgia today\, with specific attention on recent legislation and how water supply/quality could impact future growth and development. \nThe second part of the Workshop includes a group of speakers (some Planners and some water/wastewater/stormwater managers) who will outline their experiences of how Planners and water/wastewater/stormwater managers work together to make growth and development decisions.  A panel of speakers will then answer questions and present their views on better ways for Planners and water/wastewater/stormwater managers to work together to grow and develop our living spaces more sustainably. \nSession I:  Georgia’s Water History (Presented by Jack Dozier)Session I will provide a brief review of water in Georgia\, specifically focused on how water has facilitated growth and development throughout the State over time.  This presentation will include a discussion of the evolution of environmental legislation\, what inspired that legislation\, and how it in turn changed our approach to growth.  The presentation will highlight the need for environmental protection and economic growth to go hand-in-hand\, and not one at the expense of the other\, to enable us to enjoy a quality of life unparalleled at any time in history. \nSession II: Water\, Wastewater and Stormwater System Infrastructure (Presented by Pam Burnett and Ellen Heath)Session II will provide an overview of how water\, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure is built\, operated\, and maintained. Included in this session will be a presentation of the issues that water managers face including multi-jurisdictional watershed management\, reduced water availability\, higher energy costs\, reduced revenues due to water conservation\, more stringent water treatment regulations\, and customer affordability/rate structures. \nSession III: The Water Situation Today (Presented by Katie Kirkpatrick and David Ashley)Session III will focus on the water situation facing Georgia today\, with specific emphasis on water supply\, water quality\, and how water availability could impact future growth and development throughout the State.   Included in this presentation is a discussion on the allocation of water among three competing states (Georgia\, Alabama and Florida); the Judge Magnuson decision on the use of water from Lake Lanier; and the Statewide Water Plan\, and what it means for Planners. \nSession IV: Working with Planners (Janeane Giarrusso\, Donna Joe\, Garnett Brown\, Mike Hopkins)During Session IV\, representatives from different water managers will present their experiences of how they work with Planning and Development Departments both on a daily and long term planning basis.  Examples of “what works” and “what doesn’t work” when collaborating among land use planners and infrastructure providers will be presented. Examples of multi-departmental coordination and collaboration will be presented as a model for sustainable water infrastructure development. \nSession V: Collaboration Opportunities for a More Sustainable Future (Panel of Speakers from previous Sessions)A panel of speakers from the previous Sessions will answer questions from the audience and present their views on opportunities for Planners and water managers to work better together.
