Description of Job / Position
The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) is the regional planning and intergovernmental coordination agency that focuses on issues critical to the region’s success, including growth and development, transportation, water resources, services for older adults and workforce solutions. ARC is dedicated to unifying the region’s collective resources to prepare the metropolitan area for a prosperous future. This is done through professional planning initiatives, the provision of objective information and the involvement of the community in collaborative partnerships.

The Community Development Group is within the Center for Livable Communities and manages initiatives undertaken through the Community Development Assistance Program (CDAP), Livable Centers Initiative (LCI), and other activities.

The Planner will be responsible for performing entry level professional planning duties including gathering, compiling and analyzing data; coordinating project logistics; and assisting with program administration and project management. This individual is expected to play a key role in work carried out through CDAP, LCI and local and regional comprehensive plans.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reviews and verifies program documentation from participants; meets with participating community representatives; conducts site visits to perform evaluations; reviews and approve applications or advise on application rejections;
  • Assists with program initiatives including researching new initiatives, compiling information, updating data, assisting local planning agencies, and/or receiving and processing program invoices;
  • Facilitates stakeholder processes and task force meetings including organizing meetings, establishing agendas, preparing backup materials, coordinating speakers, and collecting input;
  • Prepares original documents and written materials including reports, newsletters, local comprehensive plans, and/or press releases;
  • Prepares and updates digital media including website maintenance and coding/designing digital media;
  • Assists senior level planners, supervisors and managers with meeting content, presentations, meeting coordination, project management and/or stakeholder relations;
  • Perform other duties assigned to support agency goals and objectives.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Knowledge of the purpose and scope of work carried out by the Atlanta Regional Commission;
  • Knowledge of local planning practices such as plan and ordinance preparation, and the role of appointed and elected officials;
  • Knowledge of the links between transportation, land use, housing, economic development, community development, and natural resources;
  • Skill in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping and analysis;
  • Skill in Adobe Creative Suite software including InDesign and Illustrator;
  • Skill in innovative outreach and engagement activities, including the use of social media;
  • Ability to conduct field work in a variety of conditions;
  • Ability to conduct research and perform quantitative and qualitative analysis;
  • Ability to contribute to complex projects and to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team;
  • Ability to assist in providing technical assistance, conducting trainings and workshops, and developing innovative, collaborative solutions to build local capacity;
  • Ability to work with elected officials, government agencies, nongovernmental organizations, partner agencies, local governments, and the general public;
  • Ability to immediately contribute to assignments in a diversity of topics including but not limited to creative placemaking, affordable housing, bicycle-pedestrian planning, green infrastructure, historic preservation, and access to healthy food;
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office or other word processing, spreadsheet graphing and analysis, and/or presentation software.

Job Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION (equivalent combination acceptable):

  • Bachelor’s degree in urban or regional planning, economics, architecture, landscape architecture or related field

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in urban or regional planning, economics, architecture, landscape architecture or related field
  • Two (2) years’ experience in planning or related field

ANNUAL SALARY RANGE: $49,441-$66,745 (no SS deductions except for Medicare portion, approx.
