MUST MEET MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: High school diploma or GED; supplemented by vocational/technical training in building plan review, fire marshal plan review, or building construction; supplemented by two (2) years previous experience and/or training involving building plan review and building construction.

TYPING SPEED: 35 WPM PREFERRED. (If requested by the department, Typing Test will be administered at a later date. Application will be reviewed and sent to the department if all other minimum qualifications are met.)

NATURE OF WORK: The purpose of this classification is to review residential construction plans; provide guidance to property owners, general contractors, engineers, architects, and the Inspection Division; coordinate proper submittal, review, and approval of residential building site plans, architectural plans, construction documents, and specifications to ensure compliance with applicable codes/ordinances.

SOME OF THE ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES INCLUDE: Meets with property owners or their authorized agents; explains necessary documentation and procedures for submitting building permit applications and for approval of construction/site plans for new, remodeling, or interior finishing projects on residential buildings. Assists in interpreting and enforcing the provisions of applicable federal, state, and local codes, laws, rules, regulations, specifications, standards, policies and procedures; initiates any actions necessary to correct deficiencies, variations, or violations. Reviews plans for accuracy, completeness, consistency with County Code and ensures that plans are attached to the permit record. Coordinates notification to owners of any errors and re-submits corrected drawings to inspectors. Tracks plans review status and ensure that approved plans are attached to the building permit record. Processes approved plans for permitting; coordinates notification to owners that plans have been approved and are ready for permitting; calculates costs of permit fees. Input permit application data into the permitting system. Attach application and all related support documentation to the application record number. Performs customer service functions; answers telephone calls and provides information/assistance regarding review of plans, inspection activities, codes/ordinances, fees, procedures, documentation, or other issues; receives/processes requests for inspections; responds to routine questions, complaints, or requests for service; conducts research; initiates problem resolution. Monitors and analyses permit reports to track application progress; quickly resolve processing issues; update customers by phone/email on process impediments; initiates appropriate resolution and escalates unresolved concerns to supervisors. Monitors all approved permit applications and ensures that permit is issued within ten working days. Communicates with supervisor, employees, and other departments, fire marshals, inspectors, contractors, architects, engineers, utility companies, property owners, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Maintains a current knowledge of applicable laws/regulations; maintains an awareness of new materials, devices, products, and construction methods; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate. Performs other related duties as
required.

Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

SELECTION PROCEDURE: Selection will be made from a register of eligible applicants that may be established by education, work experience, test score, personal interview, credit check, criminal history, driving history (copy of driver’s license may be required), drug screen, and/or physical examination.

SALARY: $42,064 ANNUALLY
