Description
Blue Cypress is seeking a part-time Community Planning Intern to support current projects in the areas of transportation planning, land use analysis, and community engagement. As a support role to our team, the Community Planning Intern will help collect data, carry out technical analysis related to land use and transportation, draft planning narratives, and support public outreach efforts. This candidate must be a self-starter, receptive to feedback and learning new skills, and enjoy working in a team environment. The ideal candidate has demonstrated experience in consulting, planning and data analysis, and professional writing and is interested in community outreach and engagement.
- Provide community planning support services for land use and transportation projects and other Blue Cypress projects as opportunities arise.
- Perform current and long-range planning tasks concerning land development, transportation planning, urban design, and others, as current project work allows.
- Conduct technical planning analysis and related writing tasks to support existing conditions analyses, planning recommendations, and public and stakeholder education and input.
- Help conduct community engagement initiatives, including preparation and analysis of input activities and facilitation of public and stakeholder meetings.
- Help create project documentation and online presence for promotion of public input opportunities using a variety of platforms, such as Wix, Social Pinpoint, SurveyMonkey, MailChimp, ESRI StoryMaps, and social media.
- Support office functions as needed, such as marketing initiatives and data entry.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in city, urban or regional planning, urban design, landscape architecture, geography, public administration, or a related technical discipline
- Coursework in city, urban, or regional planning, urban design, or public policy with progress toward a master’s degree in city, urban, or regional planning or a related field
- Understanding of land use planning and zoning principles and practices
- Understanding of transportation planning data tools, processes, trends, and best practices
- Understanding of major data sources for planning, including state and federal data sources, local zoning and community development ordinances, GIS, and others
- Flexibility and desire to work on a variety of planning projects
- Ability to manage and prioritize concurrent tasks
- Team-oriented and ability to provide creative thinking and strategies to planning work
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
- Exemplary work ethic
Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite products, particularly InDesign and Illustrator
- Interest in and ability to attend evening and weekend meetings
- Working knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS

Work Environment

This is a hybrid position (in office/remote). We offer a telecommute option to work once a week from the office, with a minimum of 6 times per month at the office, and the remainder of the time to work from home. If desired, employees may work up to every day in the office instead of at home. During onboarding, new hires may be required to work more frequently in-person at the office with their supervisor. While in the office, the employee will normally work in a temperature-controlled office environment, with frequent exposure to electronic office equipment. Smoking and vaping shall be prohibited in all enclosed areas within the workplace.

Salary Range
$17-22/hour
