Description
The Planning Project Manager I utilizes extensive experience in the administration of zoning and design of ordinances, parks, urban plazas, streetscapes, greenways, and other developments to lead CPL’s dedicated teams in preparing plans, reports, and administering public processes.

Reporting to a Principal, you establish project timelines; balance client needs and budgets; consolidate construction documents and design details; schedule, attend and lead design charrettes; and engage in reviews with various governing agencies. As a Project Manager you are also tasked with developing and mentoring those under your supervision. The Project Manager is a supervisory role.

  • Performs and manages professional planning projects, research, and analysis. 
  • Monitors and ensures compliance with local, state, and federal laws. 
  • Advises various councils, boards, commissions, and elected officials in planning-related issues. 
  • Assigns project tasks to professional staff and ensures successful delivery (on-time and within budget). 
  • Attends substantial number of evening and weekend meetings. 
  • Travel to other local offices and clients may be necessary.
  • Writes staff memos for zoning-related applications for boards and councils. 
  • Conducts research on planning and zoning-related matters. 
  • Completes zoning plan reviews for commercial building permits, land disturbance permits, plans and other land development/zoning related applications. 
  • Presents cases to authorities and commissions. 
  • Manages long-range planning and zoning projects for multiple clients. 
  • Reads, interprets, and writes zoning and other codes.
  • Participates in internal master planning charrettes. 
  • Reviews reports for comprehensive and other master plans. 
  • Manages concurrent small to medium projects and successfully delivers these on time and on budget. 
  • Facilitates and participates in outreach initiatives, including leading and managing outreach tasks as a part of larger planning efforts. 
  • Observes business development activities such as client engagement, proposal writing, and presentations. 
  • Serves as a secondary client liaison under the Principal.  
  • Understands key legislation at the state and federal level that impacts the planning profession. 
  • Supervisory requirements, including recruitment and retention of talent including:
  • Engages and fosters the growth of CPL team members. Provide encouragement and regular feedback; and serve as a mentor/example for all levels of the team.
  • Manages/oversees career conversations with your team on an established schedule (annual career conversations, regular check-ins, and the development of career plans for each team member).
  • Develops future leaders within the organization (train your replacement).
  • Engages, motivates, and leads internal and external stakeholders to develop strategies and plans to move the organization in the desired direction.
  • Influences people through effective communication .
  • Promotes justice, diversity, and fairness in the organization.

Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration or related field is preferred
  • Membership in the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) is required.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of planning experience with at least two (2) years of experience as a senior-level planner.
  • Prior supervisory experience is highly preferred.
  • Able to work well in a team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent written and communication skills.
  • Skilled in organizing time, resources, and tasks.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient at using Microsoft Office Suite.

Salary Range
$80,000-$120,000
