Planning Technician

The Planning Technician has the following basic responsibilities:

  • Provides technical assistance and information to staff and the public pertaining to the administration of specific planning program areas or ordinances
  • Reviews applications to assure compliance with requirements such as use, parking ratios, height, and other development standards
  • Performs routine office tasks in designated program areas, including preparation of zoning certification letters, reviews of business licenses and other applications for zoning compliance, data entry for and the issuance of temporary sign permits, answering telephone calls and emails
  • May perform occasional site inspections for zoning compliance
  • Process business license
  • Researches and compiles information on a variety of planning issues from multiple sources
  • Prepares public notices or property owner verifications
  • Prepares maps, charts, and tables of limited complexity
  • Attends public meetings (including night meetings), assisting other planning staff as appropriate
  • Provides excellent customer service; receives and screens visitors, telephone calls, and emails; provides information regarding division and department functions; skillfully handles inquiries; researches and responds to requests; serves as the lead Planner of the Day
  • Demonstrates excellent organizational, verbal, and interpersonal, research, time, and program management, and conflict management skills;
  • Demonstrates competency in managing multiple tasks, meeting deadlines, setting priorities, and determining objectives and strategies to achieve tasks;
  • Demonstrates understanding and application of general division and department policies, procedures, systems, and protocol.

Minimum Qualifications

  • The completion of a bachelor’s degree in urban planning, geography, public administration, urban economics, architecture, construction management, social sciences or related field.
  • Post graduate degrees desirable
  • One (1) year of experience in plans review, zoning administration and comprehensive planning is preferred
  • Intermediate or advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, as well as Internet applications and GIS
  • Knowledge of office policies, procedures, systems, protocol, methods, and equipment
  • Oral communication, interpersonal, and creative problem-solving skills to explain rules and procedures clearly to the public and gather relevant information
  • Ability to review plans and apply provisions of the ordinances and codes to determine compliance with regulations, and to apply regulations to field conditions
  • Ability to work on several projects or issues simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment as needed
  • Intermediate or advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, as well as Internet applications and GIS

Job Requirements
The position of Planning Technician is an entry-level role. The Planning Technician spends a significant amount of time on routine administrative tasks, works closely with the public on a regular basis to provide customer service on planning issues, and may be asked to perform delegated professional-level (Planner I) duties of limited complexity.
