SUMMARY:Resilient Communities
DESCRIPTION:This Practicum provides sea level rise science\, research on shoreline movement\, and the implications for the Georgia coast. \nThis workshop is facilitated by Jason M. Evans\, PhD Environmental Sustainability Analyst\, Environmental Policy Program for the Carl Vinson Institute of Government in Athens\, GA. Dr. Evans helps state and local leaders examine and develop comprehensive environmental management policies and practices. Trained as an interdisciplinary ecologist\, he is an expert in developing policy recommendations that take into account the wide range of possible environmental implications. \nThe workshop is also facilitated by Clark R. Alexander\, Ph.D.\, Professor at Skidaway Institute of Oceanography in Savannah\, Georgia. His research and projects include sedimentary processes on continental margins\, coastal and barrier island geology\, rates and processes of shoreline change\, quaternary sea level history\, and barrier island formation and stratigraphy. The workshop will provide the Coastal Resources Division’s regulatory and research role and present information about the Coastal Hazards Portal\, armored shoreline database\, and how coastal planners can consider this type of information in planning. \nThe Practicum will include population/land use growth models for coastal counties\, and provide a thorough review of the various legal obligations and policy challenges that local governments face when they start to grapple with sea level rise issues. The workshop will present results of Governor’s South Atlantic Alliance coastal vulnerability assessment project pertaining to sea level rise hazards\, and other modeling results\, such as new Sea Level Affecting Marshes Model (SLAMM) modeling for GA.

SUMMARY:Safe Routes to School
DESCRIPTION:Safe Routes to School is about much more than simply providing sidewalks. The factors which influence whether or not a student walks or rides a bike to school are complex. The top two barriers to walking and bicycling to school\, as reported by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention1\, are long distances (62%) and traffic danger (30%). Both of these factors are directly related to where the school is located. In recognition of the importance of school siting\, Congress directed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to develop voluntary School Siting Guidelines which encourage a holistic approach to school siting issues\, particularly as related to children’s health. This workshop proposes to look not only at Safe Routes to School\, but to take a step back and look at the school itself. As long as the predominant development pattern for new schools continues to be mega‐campuses on greenfield sites miles away from the populations they serve\, Safe Routes to School will continue to be elusive to much of Georgia’s student population. \n1 U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
