SUMMARY:Georgia Smart Communities Challenge Final Presentation: Traffic Monitoring in the City of Valdosta
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, the Partnership for Inclusive Innovation supports communities across Georgia through the Georgia Smart Communities Challenge community research assistance program. Georgia Smart empowers communities to envision and plan for a smarter future by providing opportunities to work with Georgia Tech and university researchers to advance local initiatives. In 2020\, the City of Valdosta was one of four communities supported by Georgia Smart for their “Traffic Monitoring and Communication System to Improve Safety\, Connectivity\, and Efficiency” project. \nOver the last year\, the City of Valdosta project team has piloted a smart traffic management system connecting all 128 city traffic signals\, with enhancements to the system including hardware and software upgrades at signals and in the traffic control operations center and installation of communications responders in city fire trucks. They have also deployed a corresponding TravelSafely app so that community members can stay engaged with all smart signals. \nPlease join the Partnership and the Georgia Planning Association for this virtual event of City of Valdosta’s final project presentation. He has 34 years of experience specializing in\nmunicipal and county government and state agency infrastructure\, management\, and operations.  \nBaabak Ashuri\nGeorgia Institute of Technology\nProfessor\nDr. Ashuri’s work has focused on quantitative methods for construction engineering and management specifically related to construction analytics\, innovative project delivery\, and valuation of green-energy investments.

Georgia Smart empowers communities to envision and plan for a smarter future by providing opportunities to work with Georgia Tech and university researchers to advance local initiatives. In 2020\, Clayton County was one of four communities supported by Georgia Smart for their “Smart Pedestrian Planning” project\, which sought to identify smart technologies to support walkability in the community. \nOver the last year\, the Clayton County project team has employed local high school students to use new semi-automated data collection methods to inventory roadsides and sidewalks throughout the county and along main pedestrian corridors to build a robust database needed to support the pedestrian asset management system. \nPlease join the Partnership and the Georgia Planning Association for this virtual event of Clayton County’s final project presentation. Dr. Guensler’s research focuses on sidewalk infrastructure\, vehicle and person activity monitoring\, vehicle operating conditions\, system performance monitoring\, data communication\, and visualization.

DESCRIPTION:Each year\, the Partnership for Inclusive Innovation supports communities across Georgia through the Georgia Smart Communities Challenge community research assistance program. Georgia Smart empowers communities to envision and plan for a smarter future by providing opportunities to work with Georgia Tech and university researchers to advance local initiatives. In 2020\, the city of Sandy Springs was one of four communities supported by Georgia Smart for their “Streamlining Suburban Transit” project\, which sought to pilot Transit Signal Priority with an Application Program Interface. \nOver the last year\, the Sandy Springs project and research team have worked together to plan\, install\, pilot\, and evaluate the innovative TSP system using an API\, including its effects on the corresponding bus system. The project sought to improve mobility\, maximize the transit system and improve walkability and sense of place in the Perimeter and Roswell Road areas without the need for extensive infrastructure investments such as bus-only lanes or expensive hardware and radios. Specifically\, Sandy Springs will test TSP on MARTA bus route 5 which connects the Dunwoody and Lindbergh MARTA rail stations and operates with 15-minute headway. \nPlease join the Partnership and the Georgia Planning Association for this virtual event of the City of Sandy Springs’ final project presentation. Kristen is AICP certified and has nearly 20 years of transportation experience\, including 9 years working at the City of Sandy Springs. \nMichael Hunter\nGeorgia Institute of Technology\nProfessor\nDr. Hunter has over 20 years of experience in evaluating corridor control and communication technology.
