SUMMARY:The Newton Model: A Story of Community Collaboration and Action
DESCRIPTION:In April 2012\, Baxter International announced its plans to build a $1 billion state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Covington\, GA\, to support its plasma-based treatments. This move will create over 1\,500 new full-time jobs and have a significant impact on the regional economy. \nCommunities across the country seek to draw this type of company to create high-wage jobs and drive economic development\, but how this story unfolded is far from formulaic. \nThis training will share how a dedicated group of community leaders embarked on a process of education\, planning and collaboration that now constitutes the “Newton Model.” Many point to this process\, and the resources it has created\, as crucial to securing the Baxter deal. \nParticipants will come away with a clear understanding of this model of cooperation among local governments\, as well as ideas for how they can spur similar discussions and progress in their own communities.  \nThis one-day training will be followed up by an optional second day interactive Learning Lab on how participants can apply the principles of the “Newton Model” to their communities\, using key facts and data. More information on this day is below. \nDay One: WorkshopOctober 16\, 2013 | 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.The Center | 2104 Washington Street SW\, Covington\, GA 30014Cost is $75 per person and includes breakfast\, lunch and bus tourRegistration deadline: October 2 \nIn a one-day intensive Learning Lab at The Center for Community Preservation and Planning\, attendees will learn how to find and use facts and data to build strong collaborative teams in their community. In advance of the Learning Lab\, The Center’s team of experts will accumulate data\, maps\, research and analysis specific to each attendee’s community. Within a classroom environment\, attendees will: \n\nLearn how to use facts\, data\, maps and other visuals as tools for building collaboration\nExplore accessing data and using maps relevant to their community\nCreate community-specific portfolios filled with fact-based tools\n\nParticipants will create a personalized step by step process for how to begin building stronger collaboration within their community. \n** AICP Certification Maintenance (CM) credits will be pursued for this event. \nDay Two: Learning Lab (created and managed by The Center)October 17\, 2013 | 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.The Center | 2104 Washington Street SW\, Covington\, GA 30014Cost is $600 per person and includes breakfast and lunch. \nREGISTER HERE
