Sustainable Atlanta Roundtable: Public Health and the Environment

Speakers:

  • Raymond Lindholm, Legal Research Fellow with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
  • Michael Elliot, Ph.D., School of City and Regional Planning, Georgia Institute of Technology

Public health has been a factor in comprehensive planning since the Industrial Revolution, when people looking for jobs caused overcrowding, inadequate housing and overwhelmed public services. At the same time, the factories providing those jobs were polluting the air and water, requiring long working hours and employing children among other issues. All of these ingredients contributed to a poor health environment. Enter city planning.

Planning’s emphasis on public health has gone up and down over the last century. Today, we are seeing a renewed interest as the cause and effect of well planned development decisions on improved public health are being reinforced by good research. Our speakers Michael Elliott, Ph.D., School of City and Regional Planning, Georgia Tech and Raymond Lindholm, Legal Research Fellow with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are well qualified to lead our discussion of these subjects.

The Sustainable Atlanta Roundtable is generally hosted on the first Friday of each month; however, please check this site for updates as occasional scheduling changes do occur.
