Land Use & Zoning Law Seminar from September

The Atlanta Department of City Planning hosted a Land Use & Zoning Law Seminar on September 16, 2025.  The purpose of the seminar was designed to inform and engage key internal stakeholders in city planning and governance.  It provided an opportunity for employees to enhance their understanding of the legal landscape shaping Atlanta’s future. Attendees were not only from the Department of City Planning but included staff and/or officials from the Departments of Parks & Recreation, Law, Atlanta Police, City Council and Office of the Mayor.

The guest lecturer for the seminar was Attorney Harold Buckley, Jr. AICP.  He is Managing Member of the Firm at Wilson Brock & Irby, LLC. The seminar was divided into three (3) sessions and qualified for 4-CM self-reporting credits including the Law CM-credit:

Session 1 – Land Use & Zoning Law History

Session 2 – Relationship Between Land Use, Zoning & Special Codes

Session 3 – Case Law Regarding Land Use, Zoning & Special Codes

The session presentations were very informative and can be used as references for all practicing planners. Therefore, Attorney Buckley has graciously agreed to share the session materials with members of the Georgia Planning Association.

Comments received after the seminar expressed interest in the Department of City Planning conducting future governance related seminars.
