Elgin Cleckley, NOMA, is an Associate Professor of Architecture at UVA, where he directs the undergraduate program and leads Design Justice initiatives at the Equity Center. Principal of the award-winning Empathic design practice, his work spans architecture, education, and community engagement. A UVA and Princeton graduate, he has earned national teaching, design, and public service honors, and his scholarship supports his forthcoming book with Island Press. Elgin is a strong advocate for equity in design education and has exhibited nationally, including at the Smithsonian. Cleckley’s book, Empathic Design, provides essential approaches and methods for designing public spaces with respect for the history and lived experiences of communities. This work ensures that all people, especially those marginalized and harmed by systemic oppression, are represented in their built environment.
